What to Pack for a Tropical Honeymoon

What to pack when honeymooning to places like the Maldives, Bora Bora, Hawaii, Jamaica, Belize, the Seychelles or Fiji

Ready to jetset off on a honeymoon that’s all about sun, sea, and endless turquoise waters? If you’re setting your sights on the white-sand, dreamy destinations of the Maldives, Bora Bora, Hawaii, or Fiji, you’re in for a treat—and packing right is your first step to paradise. This section’s all about helping you fill your suitcase with just what you need for those tropical vibes. We’re talking the perfect mix of swimwear for those endless ocean dips, lightweight outfits that’ll keep you cool while you’re out exploring, and a couple of fancy options for those romantic dinners by the sea.

What to Pack for a Beach Honeymoon:

Sun Protection:

Don’t forget to get a reef-safe sunscreen to protect the tropical reefs, also add stylish hats and UV-protection sunglasses! A chic, wide-brimmed hat not only shields you from the sun but also adds a chic touch to your beach look.

Insect Protection:

Also, when going to the tropics of more humid countries, always bring mosquito-repellent spray (and bring plenty!!) I highly recommend Repel for it’s super-strength and also these all-natural mosquito-repelling BRACELETS. If you’re looking for a natural, deet-free bug spray option, I love this one! It’s what we use at home in Charleston in the summer months.

Converters + Electronics:

If you’re leaving the US, the plugs and plugs/outlets in Europe or Asia are not the same!! So make sure to buy a power converter and adapter like this one, which is an adapter, not just a converter, so if you have hair tools that are dual voltage, they will work! My favorite dual voltage curler is this one – it always works abroad when nothing else will!

Swimwear that Makes a Statement:

In places where the water is as clear as crystal, you’ll want swimwear that stands out. Pack a variety of options – from bikinis with fun prints to elegant one-pieces. These are some of my favorites!

matching swimwear with your hubby or wife? yes please!

Cover-Ups:

The perfect cover-up can take you from a lazy beach day to a casual lunch by the sea, and you’ll look FAB doing it. Pack lightweight, airy tunics or kimono wraps that embody the effortless elegance of island living. And, bonus, look great in all the pics.

Date Night ‘Fits:

Evenings in paradise call for outfits that are going to go perfectly with that insta-worthy sunset. For her, flowy dresses in soft, romantic fabrics and for him, linen shirts paired with tailored shorts or lightweight men’s linen pants. Don’t forget a light sweater or shawl for breezy nights (I like to pack one that I use on the plane that works for both!)

Matching couple’s outfits:

it’s your honeymoon! There’s no better or more fun time to match your new husband or wife in a cute matching outfit.

Shoes:

I’d recommend bringing sandals that can easily transition from beach to dinner, and potentially one pair of dressier sandals for those romantic dinners.

Simon Miller Salerno Sandal in Natural Dolce Vita Selda Slide in Light Natural

Bags:

I’d recommend bringing a waterproof pouch for your essentials during beach days (I like to use one on the plane for in-flight essentials as well!), a durable yet stylish beach bag.

The Peyton Starfish Pouch Top-Handle Bag 0

Hat Attack Lola Bag in Natural

Camera:

I’d recommend packing a high-quality underwater camera (I use this one) and a polaroid is super fun to bring on your honeymoon, too!

$129, Amazon

Personal Touches:

Pack a few items that make the destination feel even more special. A fragrance that captures the essence of the tropics (I wore this one for our honeymoon, and it still reminds me of our honeymoon!! there’s something so special about perfumes that can take you right back to a memory –  highly recommend!!), and definitely make a perfect playlist that’s set the vacation mood. There are still songs that remind me of our honeymoon, which I love 🙂

Honeymoon Packing Tips:

  • Packing Cubes are king!! Packing Cubes are every good packer’s secret. It’s how I keep everything organized when traveling as much as we do! You can get them for under $9.99 on Amazon, though for a little more, these Paravel beauties are the best of the best (and you can have them monogrammed with your new monogram!!!! So cute)
  • Roll, Don’t Fold: Maximize space and minimize wrinkles by rolling your clothes instead of folding them. This technique is especially effective for lightweight fabrics common in tropical attire.
  • Pack for the Plane: Keep essentials like a change of clothes, basic toiletries, and important documents in your carry-on. Arriving in paradise feeling fresh and prepared starts your honeymoon off on the right note!
  • Check the Weather: Tropical destinations can occasionally surprise you with a rain shower and a sudden change in weather. Most hotels will have umbrellas available for you, so I don’t necessarily recommend packing one, but depending on the season, you may want to bring a light rain jacket (but check! I usually am fine without one).

And I always love to bring chic, light weight, vibrant dresses – perfect for the tropics!

Strolling through charming European cobblestoned plazas, dining in candlelit restaurants, and soaking in the rich culture—Europe is definitely for lovers and the perfect choice for honeymooners! Whether it’s honeymooning on the dreamy Italian Amalfi Coast, island-hopping in Greece, strolling through France’s lavender fields, or hiking the coastlines of Portugal, Europe is not only a great honeymoon destination to experience – but a fun one to pack for!!!!

What to Pack for a Europe Honeymoon

My favorite dual voltage curler is this one – it always works abroad when nothing else will!

Pajamas for your European honeymoon:

Romantic Adventure Honeymoon in Bali, Costa Rica, Thailand

If you and your other half are heading on a romantic-meets-adventure honeymoon destination like Bali, the green jungles of Costa Rica, or the cool vibes of Thailand, you want to make sure you pack light and breezy clothes that keep you cool in the sticky humidity, but don’t forget to bring a few warm layers for those mountain hikes and rainforest adventures.

What to Pack:

  • Versatile Clothing: You’ll want lightweight, quick-dry fabrics for those jungle hikes or waterfall swims. Include a mix of shorts, tees, and depending on where you’re headed, long-sleeved tops for protection against the sun and insects. For her, pack a couple of beautiful, flowy easy-to-wear dresses for those romantic dinners. For him, breathable linen shirts or island shirts like these – my husband’s go-to 🙂 .
  • Shoes: Durable hiking shoes are a must for exploring the rainforests of Costa Rica or trekking through Thailand. I’d recommend hiking shoes, comfy sneakers and casual sandals.
  • Adventure Essentials: Don’t forget to pack a high-quality, waterproof backpack for day trips, a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated, and a travel first-aid kit is always a good thing to pack, too. You’ll also need sunscreen and bug spray!
  • Camera: You’re going to want to bring a good camera for places like these if you’re anything like me and love travel photography! If you want to just stick to your iphone, that works too but I’d consider adding in a fun polaroid camera for the memories! Just don’t forget to buy film, too!
  • Dinner outfits: For romantic dinners, whether it’s a beachside meal in Bali or a cozy dinner out at your resort, you’re going to want to pack some fun honeymoon-worthy outfits! I linked some favorites below.

Jetset Packing Tips

  • Organize by Activity: Pack your luggage by grouping items based on your honeymoon activities—beachwear, hiking gear, scuba diving, romantic dinners , etc —to make it easier to find what you need without rummaging through your suitcase. And do it in packing cubes!! They are a godsend!
  • Stay Healthy: I like to take these probiotics while traveling to stay healthy, and take a coconut charcoal pill if anything unsettles my tummy (Bali belly is real!!!) and I like to pack a travel-sized hand sanitizer, and a basic first-aid kit!!
  • Be Respectful of Local Culture: Pack a lightweight scarf or sarong for temple visits in Thailand or cultural ceremonies in Bali, something that can cover shoulders and knees, if need be.
For long flights:

Wine Country Honeymoon in Napa or Tuscany

A trip to Napa Valley or Tuscany is not just about savoring the world-class wines but also about getting the full lifestyle experience—leisurely picnics in vineyards, sunset views from a cozy bistro, and strolls through picturesque towns. For couples who find romance in a glass of wine and the rolling hills of vineyards don’t forget to pack light, airy dresses perfect for those warm afternoons tasting the finest wines, and comfortable yet chic shoes for meandering down cobblestone paths or through rows of grapes. And don’t forget a cozy wrap or jacket for those cooler evenings under the stars.

What to Pack:

Wine-tasting Outfits: Think chic but comfortable. For her, flowy dresses and a hat, of course!! Effortless elegance. For him, linen shirts and nice shorts or pants say ‘casual chic’.

Comfy shoes: You’ll be walking through vineyards, exploring charming towns, and perhaps even biking through vineyards! Bring shoes that are up for the adventure.

Dinner outfits: Pack a dressier outfit or few for those romantic dinners out in wine country.

Light Jacket or Sweater: Evenings can cool down, especially in the valleys or hillsides like in Napa Valley. You’ll definitely want a light jacket

Jetset Wine Country Packing Tips:

  • You’re going to want to bring home wine! If you plan on bringing home a few bottles of your favorite wine, consider packing a wine protector sleeve like this!! Some wineries offer direct shipping, which can simplify the process, but can be pricey.
  • Stay Hydrated: Between all the wine tastings, it’s easy to forget to drink water! Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated as you explore.

Chic dresses for wine tasting:

And don’t forget to bring your own wine carriers:

Safari Honeymoon

What to Pack:

  • The Right Color Palette: Stick to neutrals. Think khaki, olive, beige, and other earthy tones for a safari honeymoon. These colors are not just about blending in with the savannah; they’re about upping your style game while being practical about dirt and dust.
  • Layer Up: Mornings can be really cold and chilly, and afternoons can turn warm and hot. Bring along layers that you can easily add or remove. A cozy sweater, a light jacket, and breathable tees will do the trick.
  • Smart Shoes: Comfort over everything. A pair of sturdy, comfortable boots or sneakers for those safari tours, and sandals to match those chic jumpsuits.
  • Accessories are key!: A stylish hat to shield you from the sun, and don’t forget your sunglasses. Add a scarf or a bandana for a pop of style and for protection against the dust.
  • Dinner Under the Stars: Romantic dining under the stars is one of the best parts of a safari honeymoon. So even though most of your outfits might be comfort-focused, pack a few chic outfits for those magical dinners!

And yes, you CAN look chic and cute while still being prepared for all of the elements – here are some of my favorite outfits for a safari game drive

Show Me Your Mumu Cannon Romper in Seasalt Bella Dahl Rolled Hem Utility Romper in Soft Army PISTOLA Parker Short Romper in Ecru

PISTOLA Meg Short Sleeve Zip Front Romper in Marble ANINE BING Aveline Skirt in Army Green Janessa Leone Tinsley Hat in Natural

Jetset Packing Tips:

  • Stay Powered Up Throughout the Drives: A portable power bank is a lifesaver when you’re out in the bush all day. Keep your devices charged and ready to go.
  • Eco-friendly Essentials: Opt for biodegradable toiletries and a reusable water bottle. Going on safari is all about experiencing nature while leaving the smallest footprint possible.
  • Stargazing Gear: If you have room, pack a compact pair of binoculars or a small telescope – or check to see if your hotel has for you!

What not to wear on safari:

Don’t wear bright colors

This is because it is distracting to the animals and the fellow travelers on your game drive won’t be too happy when you scare off the wildlife!

Don’t wear camouflage clothing as it is illegal attire for civilians in many African countries !!!!!!!!

Don’t wear heels or wedged shoes. Comfy shoes are key! You don’t need big hiking boots (you wont be hiking) but comfort is key.

Suitcases for safari:

Most safaris have rules where you must bring soft-shelled suitcases (rather than hard-shelled) for your trip. Hard-shell suitcases are not ideal and, for the most part, soft-sided bags are required on the smaller aircraft you’ll need to take to your safari.

Honeymoon in Australia or New Zealand

For the couple who wants it all—city lights, rugged landscapes, and everything in between— a honeymoon down under in Australia or New Zealand is a great option!

What to Pack:

  • Ready to Go Outfits: The key to packing for a honeymoon down under is versatility. For her, think breezy dresses that can take you from a beach picnic to a city tour, paired with a lightweight jacket for those cooler New Zealand evenings. For him, a mix of casual shorts and tees for the day and a couple of smart-casual outfits for those romantic dinners overlooking the ocean or the mountains.
  • Adventure-Ready Gear: Whether you’re snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef or hiking through the breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand’s national parks, make sure to pack suitable activewear and sturdy, comfortable shoes that can handle a variety of terrains.
  • Lots of Swimwear: With some of the world’s most beautiful beaches and hidden hot springs in Australia you’ll want to pack a handful of swimsuit options. Also, throw in a stylish cover-up or shorts that double as casual wear for those lazy days spent lounging in the sun.
  • Sun Protection Essentials: The sun in both Australia and New Zealand can be fierce, so pack a high SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes during those adventure-filled days.
  • Evening Elegance: Don’t forget to pack a few outfits for those special nights out. Whether it’s sipping award-winning wines in Australia’s Yarra Valley or enjoying a gourmet dinner in Queenstown, having a chic ensemble in your suitcase will make those moments even more memorable.

Jetset Packing Tips:

  • Layer Up: Be ready for anything with layers and waterproof options, especially if you’re venturing into New Zealand’s unpredictable climate.
  • Protect Your Memories: Bring a durable, waterproof camera or a high-quality smartphone case to capture every unforgettable moment without worrying about damage from sand, water, or drops.
  • Stay Connected: A universal travel adapter and a portable power bank are must-haves to keep your devices charged on the go. You’ll want to share every moment of your epic love story with the world (or just keep it for your eyes only).
  • Eco-Friendly Finds: Consider packing reusable water bottles, eco-friendly toiletries, and a lightweight backpack for day trips. It’s all about exploring the natural beauty of these countries while leaving as little impact as possible.
