The 12 Best Bucket List Golf Trip Destinations in the U.S.

Whether you work in a corporate office, from home with your kiddos, or out on the road, I think it’s safe to say we are all itching to plan our next getaway and use up that PTO we’ve been banking! You’ve heard of the Adult Spring Break and the ultimate skiing and snowboarding vacations, but have you heard the buzz lately around couples golf and spa trips? Picture this – you and your closest friends (and your significant others) plan a trip to a bucket-list location that just so happens to have some of the country’s best golfing and spas. You tee off in the morning and finish the day with a massage and a good bottle of wine. In the evening, you relax by the fire, enjoy a top-tier dinner, and head to bed at a reasonable hour so you can do it all again tomorrow.

Sound like the kind of vacation you want to sign up for? You’re in luck! I have compiled a list of the best golf destinations in the U.S. that are highly recommended by golf fanatics around the world. And to make your life even easier, I’ve even included the best places to stay, where to eat, and a few things to do in each of these locations (you’re welcome). Time to tee off!

An important note on accommodations: Some of these golf courses require you to stay on property for at least one or two nights in order to book a tee time. I have included links to book with each golf resort, but if you are planning to stay a bit longer and would like to try two different hotels or Airbnbs, I have also included local spots that I think would be worth checking out!!

1. Pebble Beach – California

Photo courtesy of Pebble Beach Golf Resort

Northern California is home to one of the most prestigious, bucket-list-worthy golf courses in the U.S. – Pebble Beach Golf Links. I don’t think I’ve ever spoken to a golfer who hasn’t had this course on their must-visit list, so you know I had to start this list off strong! Pebble Beach is the #1 rated public golf course in the U.S. They have hosted several high-end tournaments since opening in 1919 (including the U.S. Open back in 2019), so it’s safe to say that you will be golfing among the greats when you golf here.

How to Golf at Pebble Beach Golf Course

  • Stay at the resort ($625/round): If you are staying onsite at either The Lodge at Pebble Beach or The Inn at Spanish Bay, you can book tee times up to 18 months in advance!
  • Book as a non-guest ($625/round + cart fee): This doesn’t cost any more than if you are a guest other than a small cart fee, however, you can only book a tee time up to 24 hours in advance, so this is risky!

A staple of the Santa Cruz community since 1947, Shadowbrook has always been known as a quirky, yet romantic destination with European influence. In order to get down to the restaurant, you will take a short ride on their cable car, which is quite the experience!! Their dinner menu includes seafood, meat/wild game, and vegetarian dishes, and their wine list is extensive.

Alderwood Santa Cruz

Alderwood Santa Cruz has an ever-changing menu inspired by the seasons. Chef Mikey’s goal is to create familiar, yet surprising dishes, and he does just that!! From their craft cocktails to their decadent desserts, Alderwood is a must when you are in the Santa Cruz area.

Gray whales can be seen from December – April, humpback whales from April – November (these are the whales you have probably dreamt of seeing!!), and blue whales are around from July until about October.

Visit the Santa Cruz Wineries

There are a handful of wineries in the Santa Cruz/Pasatiempo area, but don’t be afraid to go a little outside of the city limits! Some of the best wineries according to Travel Advisor are Beauregard Vineyard, MJA Vineyard, and Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard.

Another Tampa favorite is Élevage SoHo Kitchen & Bar (located on the first floor of the Epicurean Hotel).
