Which Caribbean Island Is Best for You? An Honest Island-by-Island Guide

Every Caribbean island seems to sell the same postcard: white sand, blue water, a frozen drink with a beautiful view. Then you land, and you find out Anguilla goes to bed at ten, St. Barths is basically the south of France with better weather, and your toddler is going to want the shallow water of Grace Bay over the dramatic cliffs of St. Lucia every single time. There’s nuance to the Caribbean!!!! That’s what I’m here for.

I love the Caribbean. From my babymoon in Anguilla, a family spring break in St. Barths, a girls trip in St. Thomas, a friend’s wedding in Grenada, Bahamas getaways, and many sailing days in the BVI, and a ton of beautiful trips to Mexico, the Caribbean is a part of me! As a luxury travel advisor, I match people to islands every week, then to the hotel that fits. Here is how I’d choose, island by island, with the hotels I book and the perks you get when you book them through me.

But which island is best for you and the trip you want? Here’s my guide to the best Caribbean islands for every type of trip sorts it by girls trips, babymoons, birthdays and more.

Anguilla: The Best Caribbean Island for Beaches, Charm and Quiet Luxury

Anguilla is the island I recommend most to honeymooners, babymooners, and young families, and it tends to be the one that surprises people most when they get there. This tiny, low-key island has some of the best sand in the Caribbean, no big cruise ships, and a great restaurant scene. You come here to lie on the beach all day, then eat grilled lobster with your toes in the sand. It’s amazing!

Getting there: American flies nonstop from Miami. This winter BermudAir adds nonstops from Boston, Newark and Baltimore-Washington. Otherwise, fly into St. Maarten and take a private boat. It’s about 25 minutes to Blowing Point, and it’s one of my favorite ways to start a trip.

Belmond Cap Juluca: Best in Anguilla for Couples

Cap Juluca sits on Maundays Bay, a long, perfect crescent that I would put up against any beach in the world. The whitewashed Moorish-style buildings run right along the sand, so most rooms open straight onto the beach. We spent the first half of our Anguilla babymoon here, and I still think about lunch at the Cap Shack. For dinner you have Pimms, Cip’s by Cipriani and Uchu for Peruvian. Book here if your trip is about the two of you and a beach.

How to Book Belmond Cap Juluca with Perks

  • Daily à la carte breakfast for two guests per bedroom
  • $100 hotel credit per room per stay, or $220 in a one-bedroom suite or above

Four Seasons Anguilla: Best in Anguilla for Families

Of all the family resorts in Anguilla, this is the one I feel strongest about. Four Seasons Anguilla sits between Barnes Bay and Meads Bay, and the Kids For All Seasons club (ages 5 to 12) is complimentary. Parents get the adults-only Sunset Pool, and little ones get the zero-entry Bamboo Pool. The service is classic Four Seasons, so things get handled before you ask. You can also walk the beach to other restaurants, so you never feel stuck on property.

How to Book Four Seasons Anguilla with Perks

  • Daily full breakfast for two guests per bedroom, in the restaurant or through in-room dining
  • $100 hotel credit per stay in guest rooms, or $200 in suites and specialty suites
  • Upgrade of one room category*, plus VIP recognition on property (*if available at check in)

Malliouhana: Best for Retro Glamour, Boutique Luxury

Malliouhana opened in 1984 as Anguilla’s first luxury hotel, and it still has that glamorous, old-school character, with bright umbrellas and a clifftop setting over Meads Bay. Today it is independent, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. I love how big its kids club is. The service runs a little slower than at the Four Seasons, but the views from the oceanfront rooms make up for a lot. Read my full Cap Juluca vs. Malliouhana vs. Four Seasons Anguilla comparison and my Ultimate Guide to Anguilla for the deep dive.

Turks and Caicos: The Best Caribbean Island for Families with Little Kids

If you have a toddler, start here. The water around Providenciales is famously clear and calm, the flights are easy, and the big family resorts know exactly what they’re doing. Culture and nightlife are thin on the ground, and that’s fine when everyone in the family is happy by 10am.

The best beaches in Turks: Grace Bay on the north shore is the famous one, lined with resorts and restaurants you can walk to. Long Bay, on the southeast side, is very shallow and calm, which is great for little kids, and it’s also kiteboarding central on windy days. Parrot Cay is a private island you can only reach by boat.

Getting there: Providenciales (PLS) has nonstops from Miami, Charlotte, JFK, Philadelphia, Newark, Dulles, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, with more cities added in season.

Grace Bay Club: Best for Families Who Want The Best Beach at Their Door

Grace Bay Club was one of the first luxury resorts on Grace Bay, and it’s smartly split in three. The Hotel is adults-only (16 and up), the Villas are built for families, and the Estate has the big residences. Kids Town takes ages 5 to 12 and is complimentary. The 90-foot Infiniti Bar is where you want to be at sunset.

Booking Your Hotel With Free Jetset Perks

How to Book Grace Bay Club with Perks

  • Daily breakfast for up to two guests per bedroom, served in the restaurant
  • $100 to $250 resort credit, scaling with your room: $100 in a junior suite or studio, up to $250 in a three bedroom
  • Upgrade on arrival*, early check in and late check out*, plus VIP recognition on property (*if available at check in)

COMO Parrot Cay: Best in Turks and Caicos for Seclusion

COMO Parrot Cay is one of my two top picks in Turks (Grace Bay Club is the other), and it’s the one I point people to when they want to truly disappear. It’s a private island you can only reach by boat from Provo, so there are no day-trippers wandering by, just a quiet stretch of white sand and the most peaceful energy. Wellness is the heart of it: the COMO Shambhala spa is incredible, and there’s an adults-only beach pool for long, slow afternoons. It’s ideal for a honeymoon, a babymoon or anyone who needs a real reset. Just know you won’t be walking to restaurants on Grace Bay. This is a stay-put-and-unwind kind of trip, which is exactly the point.

How to Book COMO Parrot Cay with Perks

  • Daily full American breakfast
  • $100 resort credit to use during your stay
  • Complimentary yoga and pilates, plus non-motorized water sports
  • Upgrade to the next room category on arrival*, plus early check in and late check out* (*if available at check in)

Amanyara: Best in Turks and Caicos for a Splurge

When budget isn’t the question, Amanyara is the one. It sits on Northwest Point, at the far western tip of Provo, on the edge of a nature and wildlife reserve, with the reefs of Northwest Point Marine Park right off the beach. Some of the best snorkeling and diving in Turks is a few steps from your lounger! It’s classic Aman: minimalist timber pavilions (some with their own infinity pools), total quiet, and service so seamless you barely notice it. It’s far from the Grace Bay scene, and that’s exactly why people book it.

Booking Your Hotel With Free Jetset Perks

How to Book Amanyara with Perks

  • Daily breakfast for up to two guests per bedroom, in the restaurant or through in-room dining
  • $100 food and beverage credit to use during your stay, plus an extra $100 per bedroom when you book a villa
  • Upgrade on arrival*, plus early check in and late check out* (*if available at check in)

More Turks and Caicos Hotels I Love

The Shore Club is on Long Bay, so you get the calm, shallow water and a quieter crowd than Grace Bay. It has three pools, the Jungle Jams kids club and SUI-REN for Asian-Peruvian dinners. My full guide to where to stay in Turks and Caicos breaks down every resort, or send me your dates and your kids’ ages and I’ll tell you which one fits.

St. Barths: The Best Caribbean Island for Food, Luxury Hospitality and a Splurge

Christina on the beach at Rosewood Le Guanahani in St. Barths

Before I ever set foot on St. Barths, I pictured private jets, caviar and everyone talking about their superyacht. Gorgeous, but a liiiittle unapproachable. But I was so wrong! St. Barths is chic and chill. Caribbean, but make it European. Long buzzy lunches, boutiques tucked into little hillside streets, an increeedible food scene, and a crowd that’s well dressed without trying too hard. No high-rises, no big resorts. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it family friendly? Also yes!! We did spring break there with our toddlers this year and had the best time.

Getting there: There are no nonstop flights from the U.S. Fly to St. Maarten and take the 15-minute hop on Winair or St Barth Commuter, or fly Tradewind from San Juan (nicer planes, and you clear customs in Puerto Rico on the way home, which makes the travel day back so much easier). Take the flight!!! We did the ferry because I was nervous about the teeny tiny planes with little ones, and it was long and rough. I’m flying next time. The landing over St. Jean beach is famously dramatic, and my toddlers LOVED watching the little planes come in.

Getting around: Rent a car, and go for the smallest one that fits. The roads are narrow, windy and hilly, there’s no Uber, and taxis are hard to come by. A Moke for one fun adults day is SO worth it.

Hotel or villa? We did both! The first half at a villa (contact me if you need recs!) with the most show-stopping view over St. Jean (and sunset French cheese boards on the terrace), then the second half at Le Guanahani. Honestly the best of both worlds. Villas are fun and a smart value for groups, but hotels give you far more in service and amenities, so my sweet spot is the hotel, or half and half.

Airelles Le Guanahani: Best in St. Barths for Families

Le Guanahani is the spot for families in St. Barths, and I loved it here so much!!! It’s tucked away on its own peninsula between the Grand Cul-de-Sac lagoon and the ocean, with 66 rooms and suites in colorful cottages, and it’s the kind of place you arrive at and immediately exhale. The lagoon is FILLED with turtles you can spot while standing up, kayaks and paddleboards are complimentary, and there’s a quick little hike to a lookout point that we loved doing in the morning. The kids club takes ages 4 to 11, and my son was obsessed. Here’s my full Le Guanahani review and my guide to St. Barths with kids.

How to Book Le Guanahani with Perks

  • Daily breakfast for two guests per bedroom, in the restaurant
  • $100 resort credit, or $200 in the two and three bedroom Signature Suites
  • Upgrade on arrival*, early check in and late check out*, plus VIP recognition on property (*if available at check in)

More St. Barths Hotels Worth Booking

Eden Rock is iconic. Absolutely iconic. It’s perched on the rock above St. Jean, five minutes from the airport, with just 33 rooms and Jean-Georges’ Sand Bar. Even if you aren’t staying, go for breakfast. We went three times and I still dream about the coffee and the waffles. Cheval Blanc St-Barth Isle de France sits on Flamands, one of the prettiest beaches on the island, and it’s as polished as it gets. Pop in for a glass of rosé overlooking the water (we did, and it was perfection). Hotel Le Toiny has just 22 suites and villas, each with its own heated pool, and it’s the most private stay on the island. Its beach club is chill and so family friendly, and the beach has loooots of turtles. My toddler was obsessed. All three are in my St. Barths travel guide, and I can book each with perks.

Don’t miss: Pearl Beach, our favorite day of the whole trip (my son named it “plane beach” and kept asking to go back), a long lunch at Shellona on Shell Beach, and snorkeling with the sea turtles in the calm, shallow water at Grand Cul-de-Sac.

St. Lucia: The Best Caribbean Island for Adventurous Couples

St. Lucia is the opposite of flat, beachy Anguilla: green mountains, rainforest, waterfalls, and the twin Pitons rising straight out of the sea. It’s the island for couples who want hiking, ziplining and a drive-in volcano in between spa days.

The mistake you don’t want to make: booking the wrong airport. Jets land at Hewanorra (UVF) in the south. That’s about 45 minutes to the Pitons, but around an hour and a half to the resorts up north. Winter nonstops to UVF come from Atlanta, Chicago, Newark, Miami, JFK and Philadelphia.

Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort: Where to Stay in St. Lucia

Sugar Beach is the St. Lucia hotel I send my clients to most. It sits right between the Pitons on Anse des Pitons, so the view from almost everywhere is the one on the postcards. Butler service comes with every booking, and rooms come with a plunge pool, a terrace or a walled garden depending on the category. Don’t skip the Rainforest Spa.

How to Book Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort with Perks

  • Daily buffet breakfast for two guests per bedroom
  • $100 resort credit to use during your stay
  • Upgrade on arrival*, early check in and late check out*, plus VIP recognition on property (*if available at check in)

The Bahamas: The Best Caribbean Escape with the Easiest Flight

The pink sand beach on Harbour Island in the Bahamas

The Bahamas is technically in the Atlantic, but nobody is checking. It has the shortest flights of anywhere on this list, with Nassau nonstops from close to 20 U.S. cities, and a huge range: a mega-resort with a water park on one island, a sleepy golf-cart town on another.

Baha Mar: Best for a Big Family Resort Vibe

Baha Mar is three hotels sharing one resort. Grand Hyatt is the big, family-friendly one (with The Reserve, a quieter hotel within it). SLS is the social one. Rosewood is the most polished and peaceful. All three share Baha Bay, a 15-acre beachfront water park that’s only open to Baha Mar hotel guests. The kids club takes ages 3 to 12, and Rosewood has its own Explorers club for ages 4 to 12.

The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort: Best for Old-School Elegance

On Paradise Island, The Ocean Club has been around since 1962 and has just 107 rooms, suites and villas. It has the Versailles Gardens, Dune by Jean-Georges, and a complimentary kids club for ages 4 to 12. Book it if you want the Bahamas to feel classic and calm.

Harbour Island: Best for Pink Sand and Charm

Harbour Island is a different world: no cars, golf carts everywhere, pastel cottages and a three-mile pink sand beach. Fly into North Eleuthera (nonstops from Miami and Atlanta), take a quick taxi to the dock, then a water taxi across. I love The Dunmore, and Pink Sands and Coral Sands are both lovely too. My Harbour Island guide and Bahamas guide have all the details.

Planning the Bahamas? Send me your dates here and I’ll tell you which island and which hotel fits your crew.

British Virgin Islands: The Best Caribbean Islands for Sailing and Group Trips

The granite boulders at The Baths on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands

The BVI are my favorite islands in the Caribbean. They sit close together and the water is calm, so a sailing charter is the move: a different cove every morning, snorkeling before breakfast, a Painkiller at the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke (where the drink was invented), and a night at Foxy’s. The Baths on Virgin Gorda, giant granite boulders you climb through to hidden pools, is worth the hype.

Getting there: American flies nonstop from Miami to Beef Island, Tortola. You do need a passport, even though the U.S. Virgin Islands are right next door.

Where to Stay in the BVI

Rosewood Little Dix Bay on Virgin Gorda is the classic, founded by Laurance Rockefeller in 1964 and reopened in 2020 after a full rebuild. It has 81 rooms on 500 acres, plus a complimentary kids club for ages 4 to 12. Scrub Island is more four-star than five, but it’s a great base to explore from. We had a group villa there, and you can read my full Scrub Island review. Before you plan a charter, read about our week sailing the BVI and my guide to sailing the British Virgin Islands.

Want a charter or a villa for your group? Tell me about your crew here and I’ll put the options together.

U.S. Virgin Islands: The Best Caribbean Trip Without a Passport

View over the water from The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas

U.S. citizens flying from the mainland don’t need a passport for St. Thomas, St. John or St. Croix, just a REAL ID. That makes the USVI perfect for a long weekend or a trip with kids whose passports have lapsed. St. Thomas has the most flights and hotels. St. John is about 58% national park, so it’s all hiking trails and quiet beaches. Note that the famous Caneel Bay resort is still closed, with no reopening date.

Getting there: St. Thomas (STT) has nonstops from New York, Boston, Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, Washington Dulles and Newark. A ferry runs over to St. John.

The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas: Where I Would Stay

The Ritz-Carlton sits on Great Bay, with 180 rooms, calm water and Ritz Kids for ages 4 to 12. It’s the easiest luxury stay in the USVI, and a great jumping-off point for boat days to St. John and the BVI. Here’s my full Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas review, plus exactly what we did on our girls trip. If you’re a bigger group, these are the best houses to rent on St. John.

How to Book The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas with Perks

Puerto Rico: The Best Caribbean Island for Culture and Food

The bioluminescent bay on Vieques, Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is the Caribbean island with the most going on. You get the cobblestones and colorful facades of Old San Juan, a serious food scene, rainforest, and resort beaches a short drive from the city. It’s U.S. territory, so no passport for U.S. citizens, and it’s about a three-hour flight from Miami.

Do not miss: Mosquito Bay on Vieques, which Guinness calls the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. You kayak it at night (no swimming allowed), so aim away from the full moon. Then there’s Flamenco Beach on Culebra, a short flight or a ferry ride away.

Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve: Best in Puerto Rico

Dorado Beach is Forbes Five-Star, with just 114 rooms and residences along a long, quiet beach. Families get Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment program. It’s the most refined stay on the island.

Booking Your Hotel With Free Jetset Perks

How to Book Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve with Perks

  • $45 per person daily breakfast credit for up to two guests per bedroom
  • $100 resort credit to use during your stay

Two more to know: Four Seasons Puerto Rico, the former St. Regis Bahia Beach, which reopened as a Four Seasons in late 2025 with golf and 483 acres of beachfront. In the city, the Condado Vanderbilt is a 1919 landmark, perfect for a San Juan night or two. More in my Ultimate Guide to Puerto Rico.

Jamaica: The Best Caribbean Island for Food, Music and Villa-Style Service

Jamaica has more personality than almost anywhere in the Caribbean: jerk stands, reggae, the Blue Mountains rising to 7,402 feet, and some of the warmest service you will ever get. Montego Bay (MBJ) has nonstops from JFK, Atlanta, Charlotte, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.

A 2026 note: Hurricane Melissa hit western Jamaica hard in October 2025. Many hotels have reopened, but some are still partly closed, so check with me before you book anything. I track which properties are fully back.

Round Hill Hotel and Villas: Where I Would Stay in Jamaica

Round Hill reopened in December 2025, and it’s still the chicest stay in Montego Bay. It’s a 110-acre peninsula with 36 hotel rooms in the Ralph Lauren-designed Pineapple House, plus 26 private villas. The Pineapple Kids’ Club takes little ones from age 3. It’s perfect for a family or a group of couples who want villa privacy with hotel service.

Booking Your Hotel With Free Jetset Perks

How to Book Round Hill Hotel and Villas with Perks

  • Daily full breakfast for two guests per bedroom
  • $100 resort credit to use during your stay

For something more bohemian, GoldenEye in Oracabessa is Ian Fleming’s old estate, where he wrote the James Bond novels. These days it’s all lagoon cottages and beach huts.

Dominican Republic: The Best Caribbean Island for Value (and Surprising Luxury)

The DR is easy to reach and full of all-inclusives, which is where its value reputation comes from. It also hides some of the most private luxury in the Caribbean. Punta Cana (PUJ) is the main airport, with nonstops from all over the U.S.

Amanera: Best for an Ultra-Private Escape

Amanera is on the north coast, about 75 minutes from Puerto Plata, with just 25 casitas on the cliffs above Playa Grande, right by the Playa Grande golf course and its 10 clifftop holes. It’s the most serene stay in the country, made for couples who want nobody around.

Booking Your Hotel With Free Jetset Perks

How to Book Amanera with Perks

  • Daily breakfast for two guests per bedroom, served in the restaurant
  • $100 food and beverage credit to use during your stay

Also on my list: Casa de Campo in La Romana, 7,000 acres with the famous Teeth of the Dog golf course. Eden Roc Cap Cana is the only Relais & Châteaux hotel in the DR. And for all-inclusive that actually feels elevated, Sanctuary Cap Cana is adults-only and part of Marriott’s Luxury Collection, about 15 minutes from the Punta Cana airport.

Aruba: The Best Caribbean Island for Reliable Sunshine

Striped beach umbrellas on the white sand in Aruba

Aruba sits about 18 miles off the coast of Venezuela, outside the main hurricane belt. It stays dry and breezy almost all year, which makes it the safest bet if you’re traveling in the fall. I celebrated a birthday here, and the island’s happy energy makes it an easy place to throw a party. More in my Aruba guide.

The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba: Where I Would Stay

The Ritz-Carlton is on Palm Beach, with 320 rooms, one of the best pools on the island, a casino, BLT Steak, and Ritz Kids for ages 4 to 12. Couples who want adults-only should look at Bucuti & Tara on Eagle Beach. And yes, you can see the famous flamingos, but Renaissance Island is now only open to guests of the Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort.

Grenada: The Best Under-the-Radar Caribbean Island

The long infinity pool at Silversands Grand Anse in Grenada

Grenada is the Spice Island, green and mountainous, with a local feel that’s getting harder to find. It’s a great pick for your second or third Caribbean trip, when you want somewhere new. Nonstops run from Miami, JFK and Atlanta.

Silversands Grand Anse: Where I Would Stay in Grenada

We stayed at Silversands for a friend’s wedding, and it was perfect for a big group. It sits on Grand Anse Beach, with a sleek, modern design and a 100-meter infinity pool that the hotel bills as the longest in the Caribbean. There are 39 rooms, four suites and eight private pool villas. Newer to the island is Six Senses La Sagesse on the quieter southeast coast, which opened in 2024 with all pool suites and villas and a kids club for ages 3 to 11. Read my Ultimate Guide to Grenada.

When Is the Best Time to Visit the Caribbean?

High season runs roughly mid-December through April, with the best weather and the highest rates. Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 to November 30, and the peak risk falls in late summer and early fall. That’s when I steer clients toward Aruba, or toward refundable rates and travel insurance.

Jetset tip: the holidays are their own season. From around December 20, most top resorts switch to festive rates with minimum night stays, and the best family suites go early. If you’re thinking about Christmas or New Year’s, reach out now. Early December is often some of the best value of the whole winter.

Why Book Your Caribbean Hotel Through a Travel Advisor?

It costs you nothing extra, and you get more. When you book the hotels above through me, you get the hotel’s best rate plus VIP perks that you don’t get booking direct or online. That means complimentary daily breakfast, resort credits (usually $100 or more), room upgrades and early check in or late check out when available, and VIP recognition on property. I also know which room categories are worth it, which rooms have the views, and which hotels are still recovering from a storm.

Fill out this inquiry form here and I’ll help you plan your trip, or you can go directly to my travel portal and see my exclusive travel advisor rates and book yourself with all of my perks included! The password is always JETSETTERS (save this page to your bookmarks for future trips!)
