The Ultimate St. Barths Travel Guide: The Best Hotels, Beaches, Restaurants & Beach Bars
I feel like I had a vague idea of what St. Barths would be like before I ever set foot on the island after years and years of hearing about it. I expected private jets, caviar, designer shopping 24/7, everyone either on a superyacht or talking about their superyacht, super expensive everything. Basically: I expected an island that was beautiful but a liiiiiittle bit unapproachable. Chic, but snobby. I expected more of a scene than a vacation.
And boy was I wrong.
Do you know what St. Barths is actually like?

Chic and chill.
The vibe is relaxed and beachy in a way I didn’t expect. Caribbean, but make it European.
Yes, the private jet crowd is there, but so are locals, families, and travelers from everywhere, and they are all effortlessly cool – like they’re in on the chic secret that is Saint Barths.
People are well dressed, sure, but most people actually aren’t trying too hard. The energy on the island, at least in April, is more effortlessly-on-vacation glam vs showy, flashy glam everywhere you look.
Saint Barths was full of cute beach clubs and delicious long lunches. Boutiques tucked into little hillside streets. Service that felt warm and genuine. An increeeedible food scene (like, incredible), and an insanely good cocktails and wine scene, too of course. All in a magical combination of European elegance and Caribbean ease that honestly felt like a little island fairytale.
It’s definitely not easy to get here (you have to fly or ferry from St. Martin, unless you’re on a yacht or private jet). BUT, the sheer fact it IS a bit harder to get to makes it exclusive and tucked away – and not everyone will get here, simply because there’s one more layer of logistics (there are no direct flights). But once you’re here, it’s hard to leave.
Is it expensive? Yes. That part, I was right about. But there are ways to do it smartly and I’m going to show you exactly how below! You definitely should go into any trip to Saint Barths knowing it’s a very expensive destination, and being okay with splurging!! ( a bit!), but there are also definitely ways to not go toooo crazy, as well.
We just got back from Saint Barts as a family (yes, with toddlers!) and I know what you’re thinking – is it family friendly?! and YES, you just have to know where to go, so I’m covering all of that too.
The thing about Saint Barths is there are truly so many ways to do it. A group trip with friends, a romantic getaway with your loved one, a girls weekend, family trip with your kids. There is something for everyone on this island, and it’s up to you to find ‘your’ St. Barths vacation style.
This is mine 🙂
Here is everything you need to know to do St. Barths!!!! And why you should absolutely plan a trip!
How to Get to St. Barths
Should I Take the Flight or the Ferry?
Take the flight. I’m going to say it clearly so nobody makes the same mistake I did: take the flight!!!
We took a boat there, the ferry back, because I was a bit apprehensive of the teeny tiny planes with little ones, and while the boat or ferry route was fine, it was also long (about an hour) and honestly pretty rough. Even on a relatively smooth day, it was nauseating. The ferry can get very rough depending on conditions, and after a long travel day from the US, the last thing you want is a choppy, scary boat ride before your vacation even starts. The flight is a quick, easy 15 minutes from St. Maarten and drops you right onto the island. Or you can fly into San Juan, Puerto Rico and take Tradewind (nicer planes, a 45 min plane ride). The benefit of the San Juan route is on your way home, you go through customs in Puerto Rico, making the travel day home a bit easier! Personlaly, I am taking the flight next time!
One thing to know about the St. Barths airport: the landing is famously dramatic -The runway is short, the approach is steep, and it is one of the most talked about landings in the Caribbean. It is thrilling, but most people say it’s kind of fun. I’m still a little scared, but I do think I’d do it next time.
BTW- you see the little planes landing over the beach all the time in St. Barts and it’s such a vibe!!! (my toddlers LOVED it!!) It’s part of the culture in St. Barts, which I think also makes me want to do it next time.
Do You Need a Rental Car in St. Barths?
Yes. You do! St. Barths is not a resort on an island situation where you can just stay put in one place. The whole point is to explore, and the best beaches, restaurants, and beach clubs are spread all around the island. You need to be able to get around and there are not taxis readily available for the most part!
A few important things to know about driving in St. Barths:
- The roads are windy, narrow, and hilly. This is not the place for a big SUV. You want a small car. like, the smallest that will fit. The roads simply are not made for anything big.
- Drive carefully and slowly. It is a small island but the roads demand your full attention.
- Automatic cars are available, TG
- A Moke (cute little open-air beach buggy) is SO fun for a day if it is just adults. Not the most practical with little ones, but absolutely worth doing for a day! We did this for one of our days and they delivered it directly to our hotel and picked up from there too!!! Super easy.
What I would do with a week in St. Barths: rental car for most of the trip + Moke for one fun day + a day or two without a car if you are just hanging at your hotel. That is the sweet spot!!!

What About Taxis in St. Barths?
Taxis are not super easily available & there is no Uber or Lyft operating on the island. There are only two official taxi stands, one at the airport and one in Gustavia, and in outlying areas or at villas, availability can be very hit or miss.
That said, taxis DO exist and are very useful for specific situations, especially nights out when you are planning on drinking and do not want to navigate those windy, hilly roads after a few glasses of rosé!!! The roads in St. Barths require your full attention even when completely sober, so if you have a big dinner night planned at Le Ti or Nikki Beach, arrange your taxi in advance.
The best way to sort a taxi in St. Barths is through your hotel concierge or villa manager. Hotels have established relationships with drivers on the island and can coordinate pickups for you, which is the easiest and most reliable route. If you are in a villa, ask your manager for a driver recommendation and get their WhatsApp number so you can coordinate directly. Booking at least a day in advance for any specific time is a smart move.
The move: rent a car for a few days of your trip, maybe a moke for a day, use taxis strategically for nights when you want to drink and explore freely!
Villa vs. Hotel in St. Barths: Which Is Right for You?
This is one of the most common questions I get about St. Barths, and honestly? Both are incredible, but they offer very different experiences. Here is how to decide.
Staying in a Villa in St. Barts
Staying in a villa is one of the best ways to make St. Barths a bit more affordable, especially if you are traveling with a group or family!! Think about it: a three bedroom villa like this one that we stayed in might run around $2,000 a night, whereas hotels can easily be $2,000+ per room per night. When you split a villa between a group, the value is undeniable. It’s also an incredible experience to be in a villa!!! (and the way a lot of people do St. Barts!!!)
We stayed at Villa La Route du Rhum, and I absolutely loved it. It had the most INCREDIBLE view of St. Jean, the best area of St. Barth. The villa wasn’t ultra luxe or super modern, but it had the most incredible character, beautiful colors, adorably chic interiors, and what I can only describe as the most show-stopping view over Saint Jean, with the moooost beautiful pool!!!!
The villa life also gave us the freedom to DIY our days in the most fun way: driving around to explore, picking up groceries, making a French cheese board for sunset on the terrace, popping into nearby Eden Rock for coffee or breakfast whenever we felt like it. There is something really special about having your own home base on an island like this.

Staying in a Hotel in St. Barths
Hotels in St. Barths are stunning! The service is impeccable, your concierge will be your best friend for getting dinner reservations, and you have everything taken care of. If you are on a honeymoon, babymoon, or just want the full luxury experience without thinking about logistics, a hotel might be the move for you.
My Favorite Way to Do St. Barths: Both!!!
We did the villa for the first half of our trip and moved to a hotel for the second half, and honestly, it was the best of both worlds. I highly recommend this approach.
The Best Hotels in St. Barths
Rosewood Le Guanahani
My top pick for families, honeymooners, and babymoon couples. It is tucked away from the busier parts of the island, absolutely stunning, and has the most romantic and secluded feel. The kind of place you arrive at and immediately exhale. I loved it here so much!!!
The pool is huge and stunning, the beaches are never crowded, there is a big, perfectly aqua-blue lagoon FILLED with turtles you can spot while standing up – it’s incredible, and there’s even a little (very quick!) hike to a lookout point on property – which we loved doing in the morning!
Food was great, service was GREAT, we loved everything!!!

Cheval Blanc St. Barth
The beach at Cheval Blanc is stunning, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. White soft sand. The vibe is chic and effortless in a very St. Barths way. Even if you are not staying, pop in for a glass of rosé overlooking the water. We did exactly this and it was perfection. 🥂

Iconic. Absolutely iconic. Eden Rock is St. Barth’s most famous luxury hotel. It is perched dramatically on a rock formation above St. Jean bay, and there is nothing else like it on the island. It is only 33 rooms!!!!! Definitely couples focused, very expensive, and worth every penny.
Even if you’re not staying, you can pop in for breakfast, coffee, drinks. We visited Eden Rock many times throughout our trip and it never got old. Their coffee was my favorite on the entire island, and the breakfast is not to be missed!!!

The Best Beaches in St. Barths
Oh my gosh, can we talk about the beaches for a second?! St. Barths has some of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen in my life, and each one has its own completely different personality. Here is your guide to the best of them!!!
St. Jean Beach
This is the heart of it all, the most iconic beach on the island. Split right down the middle by Eden Rock, it is lively, gorgeous, and surrounded by the best beach clubs and restaurants (hello Nikki Beach, Gypsea, Pearl Beach). And of course, this is THE beach for plane watching. The planes come in so dramatically low over the water that you genuinely cannot believe it every single time. Toddlers and adults alike lose their minds. 😂
Grand Cul de Sac
THIS is the beach I want every family to know about!!! Grand Cul de Sac is on the northeastern side of the island, protected by a coral reef barrier, and the result is the most calm, shallow, crystal clear turquoise water that just goes on forever. You can walk so far out and still touch the sandy bottom. It is absolutely magical with kids. And the sea turtles here are UNREAL, there are nearly 20 turtles that regularly swim in this bay, and snorkeling with them is an experience I will never forget. There are also beautiful hotels along this stretch including Le Sereno and Le Barthélemy, with restaurants you can pop into even as a non guest. Don’t miss Grand Cul de Sac!!!
Anse de Grande Saline
CNN ranked Saline Beach among the fifteen most beautiful beaches in the world! It is one of those beaches that makes you gasp when you come over the dune and it opens up in front of you. Endless fine sand, turquoise water, wild and unspoiled. There are no bars or restaurants or loungers ON the beach itself (so bring towels) , but the road leading to it is lined with some of the best restaurants on the island (including L’Esprit!!!). Pack a cooler or stop for lunch before heading down.
Gouverneur Beach
Tucked on the southern coast, Gouverneur is one of the most stunning beaches on the island and feels incredibly private. Vibrant blue water, pale white sand, surrounded by lush hills. The calm shallow waters make it great for families too. No shade though, so bring sunscreen and hats!!!
Colombier Beach
The adventure beach!!! Colombier is accessible only by foot (a beautiful 20 minute hike through bougainvillea, cacti and tropical trees) or by boat, and the fact that you have to work a little to get there makes it feel like such a reward when you arrive. The snorkeling here is incredible, sea turtles, tropical fish, starfish. It is the most secluded and wild feeling beach on the island. Pack a picnic and make a day of it!!!
Shell Beach
Five minutes walk from the center of Gustavia, Shell Beach is covered in tiny shells (hence the name!) and has dramatic views of the mountains and calm waters perfect for swimming. It is also home to Shellona beach club, one of my favorites for a long buzzy lunch. Super convenient if you are shopping or exploring Gustavia.
Flamands Beach
A long, sweeping, less crowded beach on the north side of the island, Flamands is gorgeous and more peaceful than St. Jean. Cheval Blanc sits right on Flamands, which should tell you everything you need to know about the caliber of beach it is. Beautiful for a quieter morning or afternoon swim.
The Best Beach Clubs in St. Barths
Here is something important to know before we dive in: in St. Barths, beach chairs and restaurant reservations are almost always separate. If you want a full beach day at a beach club, arrive early to secure your chairs, then stay for lunch. That is the move. Alternatively, you can just do lunch and don’t have to do beach chairs (if you have those for free at your hotel or want to hang on a public beach)
Also, the second seating is everything at the party beach club spots. First seating is chill. Second seating is when things come alive. Plan accordingly!!!
Nikki Beach
The iconic St. Barths party experience. If you want the full party scene, second seating (230) on SUNDAYS is it. But be warned: it’s small, and tables book out up to six months in advance, so if this is on your list, plan way ahead. Sunday second seating is where the magic happens! Other days, it’s chill and fun to go for some sushi and drinks!
Le Guérite
Another favorite for the party beach club lunchexperience. Saturday second seating is the one to book here for a lively time.
Shellona (Shell Beach)
Shellona is on Shell Beach just outside of Gustavia, and the food is really good, one of my highlights of our whole trip!!!!!! The vibe is buzzy and fun without being a full-on party. More adult focused, and perfect for a long indulgent lunch.
Le Toiny
Le Toiny is chill, relaxed, beautiful, and genuinely family friendly. The beach has loooots of turtles (my toddler was obsessed), the food is lovely, and it is a wonderful option for a more low key beach day. Book your lunch reservation and get there early to enjoy their beach chairs if you want to!
Gypsea Beach (Saint Jean / Pelican Beach)
Gypsea is a bohemian chic beach club on Pelican Beach in Saint Jean and it is so St. Barths in the best way. Think barefoot luxury: eating in the sand, sipping cocktails from a coconut at the Coco Bar, watching the turquoise water. The food is tropical fusion and BBQ with grilled catch of the day, lobster, fresh fruit platters. There is also a festive Rum Bar, water sports, and it is genuinely family friendly with activities for kids too.
Pearl Beach
Pearl Beach was actually our favorite day of the entire trip, and I didn’t fully see that coming!!! It is much more casual than the other clubs on this list: a relaxed beach bar, about 50 euros for a beach chair, unpretentious and fun. If you like a chill beach bar vibe and want a break from the more showy bars (but with just as good of food and drinks), this is a great spot. We watched the small planes fly in dramatically low over the beach (my toddler LOVED this and coined it ‘plane beach’ and kept asking to go back!!! We had the best time, the best drinks, and it was one of those perfect simple, chill travel days you never forget. Don’t sleep on Pearl Beach!!!
Where to Eat in St. Barths
First things first: you need dinner reservations in St. Barths. The best restaurants fill up fast and showing up hoping for a table is not the move. Your hotel concierge is your best friend here, lean on them! If you are in a villa, get on this early.
The Party Dinner Experience
St. Barths has this fun vibe where certain restaurants turn into full on festive dinner parties, music, dancing, everyone dressed up. If this sounds like your thing, you need the second seating at:
- Le Ti : legendary for the dancing on tables energy
- Le Café : fun, festive, a great night out
- Bagatelle : right on Gustavia Harbor with the most stunning waterfront setting, southern French classics with a Caribbean twist, and a vibe that starts as a chic dinner and turns into a full party as the night goes on. Think champagne, dancing, the works!
Date Night
- Bonito : we all loved Bonito so much. Great food, great vibe, stunning harbor views. Very much a see and be seen spot and the food actually matches the atmosphere, which is rare!!!
- L’Esprit : this one is a little bit of a local secret and I am completely obsessed!!! Tucked near Saline Beach in a gorgeous open air tropical garden, Chef Jean Claude Dufour (a true island legend) creates the most inventive, beautiful French cuisine. Candles, palm trees, stars overhead. It is that level of special. Go for dinner, get the duck spring rolls, and thank me later. 🌿🕯️
- Beefbar: sunset over the boats in Gustavia, incredible food, romantic and chic. We did this for a date night and it was absolute perfection.
- Sunset at Le Christopher – stop by for a drink or dinner! so beautiful!
- Romi at Tropical Hotel : Located at the Tropical Hotel in Saint Jean, Romi is an Indonesian inspired restaurant set in the most lush tropical garden setting you have ever seen. Small plates meant to be shared, flavors from Asia, South America, and the Mediterranean all on one table, with dim lighting and DJ sets that bring the most beautiful atmosphere.
- Eden Rock : wonderful for a special breakfast or coffee date (we did this three times!!! their coffee and their waffles are something I will dream about forever!! just make a reservation the day before for breakfast if you want the buffet, or pop in if you want ala carte) The breakfast buffet is 75 euros.
Family Friendly Restaurants
- Le Toiny : relaxed, lovely, great for little ones
- Pearl Beach : casual, fun, the plane watching entertains toddlers for literally hours
- Bonito : we brought the kiddos and it was great!!!!!! The BEST dinner of the trip!
- L’Esprit : The garden setting is magical for families with little ones!
- Gypsea Beach : great for kids with water sports, paddleboarding, ice cream, and activities for all ages
- Nikki Beach (just not on a Sunday) would be good with kids, too!
Casual and Local Eats to Know
Kiki é Mo : fresh juices, healthy breakfast vibes, and lunch. a good casual spot but I thought the coffee was better at Eden Rock!!!
JoJo Burger : A no-frills burger joint that has become a true St. Barths institution. Classic, unpretentious, absolutely delicious. It is literally right next to the cemetery, which is somehow very on brand for St. Barths.
Boulangerie + Petite Colombe: Two fabulous bakeries on the island. Fresh croissants, pastries, bread. The French Caribbean means delicious pastries everywhere you look.
Deli Food Delivery Service
Deli Food is like Uber Eats for St. Barths – a local delivery service that brings food from multiple restaurants right to your villa, hotel, or even the beach. Pizza, burgers, sushi, salads, fresh juices, waffles, crepes, you name it. They partner with a whole lineup of restaurants around the island and make it insanely easy to order. We ordered pizza one night and it was delicious and so easy, honestly such a lifesaver especially on those nights when you are exhausted from a day in the sun and just want to eat something amazing in your pajamas on the villa terrace!!!
They also deliver groceries, wine, and household essentials which is amazing, especially if you have kids or are doing a villa stay. You can find them at delifood-stbarth.com or download their app.
This is one of my top tips for keeping costs down on a St. Barths trip too. Not every night needs to be a full restaurant outing. Order Deli Food Island, pour a glass of wine, and eat pizza delivered on your terrace watching the sunset. Honestly might be the most St. Barths thing you can do.
Grocery Shopping in St. Barths
Grocery shopping in a french little grocery store in St. Barths to stock up the villa with provisions was one of the first things we did! We loved stopping at Monoprix Organic, and the quality of the food and snacks was incredible. The grocery store sushi was next level, and picking up a gorgeous spread of French cheeses, charcuterie, wine, and fresh bread for a sunset cheese board on our terrace was a highlight.
St. Barths With Kids? Yes! Do it!!
St. Barths can definitely be family-friendly – if you know where to go!
I know what you are thinking. St. Barths and toddlers?! But I promise you, it works beautifully as a family trip. We had the best time!!!!! You just have to know where to go and how the island works with kids (which is where I come in 🙂
Where to Eat With Kids in Saint Barth
Le Toiny, Bonito, Pearl Beach were all great with kids. I’ve also heard L’Esprit (early seating), and Beefbar would all be kid-friendly! We also ordered pizza delivery. Everything was very relaxed, welcoming, zero judgment at these restaurants! Hotels are also very prepared for children (and can help with babysitting services too!)
What to Do With Kids in St. Barths
- Watch the planes at Pearl Beach — The planes come in so low over the beach on approach to the airport. My toddler son was absolutely transfixed every single time. Plan a beach day here just for this alone!!!
- Snorkeling at Grand Cul de Sac — The shallow, calm, reef protected lagoon is THE best beach for kids on the whole island. Nearly 20 sea turtles regularly swim here and you can snorkel right alongside them in water that is only a few feet deep. Magical, magical, magical!!!
- Play with the sea turtles at Le Toiny — Le Toiny’s beach has sea turtles that come close to shore. My son was completely mesmerized. One of those magical unexpected travel moments!!!
- Wildlife spotting around the island — Here is something so fun that I did not fully expect: St. Barths is literally full of animals roaming free!!! Iguanas, wild goats on the hillsides, tortoises, pelicans, and more. Just driving around the island you will spot them everywhere. My son was SO excited every single time. It is basically a free safari!!! Keep your eyes peeled, especially on the hillside roads and near Gypsea Beach which has friendly goats and iguanas that wander right through the property, plus an adorable turtle nursery for baby turtles. My toddler absolutely loved it!!!
- Gypsea Beach – Water sports, paddleboarding, ice cream, the turtle nursery, friendly animals wandering around. So great for kids.
- Shell Beach – A fifteen minute walk from Gustavia and covered in little shells to collect. I was expecting like BIG shells, so don’t get your hopes up too high, but it’s still a cute spot and Shellona – the restaurant there – was one of my favorite meals on the island – to die for!!!!!!
Baby and Toddler Gear Rentals
One of the best things we did was use a local St. Barths baby and toddler rental provider (called Saint Barth Provider) so we didn’t have to travel with mountains of gear. Cribs, a pool slide, beach equipment, you can sort all of it locally. Our rental car also came with car seats!!! We used TopLoc rental for our car. Ask your villa manager or hotel concierge for their recommendations as well.

How to Do St. Barths on (somewhat of) a Budget
Yes, St. Barths is definitely very expensive!!! Cocktails at a nice spot will run you 20 to 25 euros, a glass of wine around 15 to 20 euros, and beach chairs add up. and if you want to spluuuurge in St. Barths, there are many, many ways to do so everywhere you turn. But there’s also a way to indulge without oooover indulging. Here are my tips for enjoying this island without completely losing your mind over the bill:
- Stay in a villa instead of a hotel, especially with a group. The per person cost drops dramatically!
- Grocery shop at Monoprix Organic. Make your own breakfasts, do a sunset cheese board, grab that incredible sushi.
- Order Deli Food delivery for easy nights in at the villa. Delicious food delivered right to you, no restaurant bill required!!!
- Mix your beach clubs. Splurge day at Nikki Beach or Shellona, balance with a casual day at Pearl Beach (about 50 euros for chairs).
- Lunch over dinner. Some of the best meals in St. Barths are at lunch, and the menus are often more approachable in price.
- Pop into the iconic hotels for a drink rather than a full meal or a full stay. You get the full experience without the full bill!!!
St. Barths FAQs – The Questions I got the Most in my DM’s on IG!
Should I take the flight or the ferry to St. Barths?
The flight!!! It is only 15 minutes from St. Maarten vs. about an hour on the ferry, which can get very rough. I took the ferry and would 100% do the flight next time. Save yourself the nausea, the time, the energy, and book the flight!!!
Do I need a rental car in St. Barths?
Yes, especially if you are in a villa. Go small (the roads are narrow and winding!!!), look for an automatic, and consider renting a Moke for at least one day just for the fun of it.
Can I taxi in St. Barths?
Taxis exist but are not readily available. Which I know, is surprising!!!! and there is no Uber or Lyft. Your best bet is always to arrange through your hotel or villa manager, and book at least a day ahead for a specific time. Plan on using a taxi for nights out when drinking is involved since those roads are very windy and hilly!!! A rental car or Moke for daily exploring plus a pre arranged taxi for big nights out is the perfect combo.
Is St. Barths family friendly?
Absolutely yes!!! You just have to know where to go. Grand Cul de Sac for the sea turtle snorkeling, Le Toiny, Pearl Beach, Bonito, and Gypsea Beach for meals, and the plane watching at Pearl Beach is so fun.
Can I visit hotels in St. Barths if I am not staying there?
Yes!!! Just book for a meal or pop in for drinks. We visited Eden Rock for breakfast, coffee, and drinks so many times, and popped into Cheval Blanc for rosé overlooking their stunning beach. It is a wonderful way to experience the island’s most iconic properties. They were all very welcoming!!!!
What is the best time to visit St. Barths? High season runs roughly December through April, when the weather is stunning (dry, warm, breezy) and the island is at its most busy. Peak around New Year’s and February is the busiest and priciest. For a quieter, more local vibe at lower prices, late April/May and November can be lovely, just know some spots may have reduced hours, or even be closed for the season.
Is St. Barths worth it?
Without a single doubt, yes! I went in with highhhhhh expectations and St. Barths exceeded every single one of them. It is one of those rare travel destinations that lives up to its reputation and then surprises you in the best possible way. You will want to go back immediately!!! I know I do.
