Where to stay in St. Barths: Villa La Route du Rhum
Ok you guys, I have to tell you about my latest obsession in the Caribbean, and truly, one of the dreamiest places I’ve ever stayed in St. Barths: Villa La Route du Rhum.
St. Barths is hands-down one of the most beautiful islands (and best travel destinations) in the world – that rare mix of French elegance, Caribbean ease, and a barefoot-luxury energy you just simply can’t find anywhere else. And while I always love a great hotel, there’s something about having an entire villa to yourselves on this island that hits differently. The privacy, the sunrise coffee on your own deck, the infinity pool with no one else in it!!! it’s the best way to experience St. Barths.
Enter: Villa La Route du Rhum. A 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom private villa perched in Saint Jean with an infinity pool overlooking St. Jean Bay, a private gym (yes, really!), and some of the best ocean views on the entire island. I had the pleasure of staying here recently and I truly cannot stop thinking about it. So of course I had to write up the full scoop for you guys.
Here’s everything you need to know about Villa La Route du Rhum, why Saint Jean is my favorite neighborhood to stay in on St. Barths, and why this villa might just be the one you’ve been looking for.
Why Stay in a Villa in St. Barths?
First, a quick PSA if you’re new to St. Barths: while the island does have some iconic hotels, most people choose to stay in private villas here. And once you’re there, it’s easy to see why.
St. Barths is one of those destinations where having your own space completely transforms the trip. You wake up to ocean views from your bed, swim in your own pool, cook a lazy breakfast in your kitchen before heading to the beach, and come home at the end of the day to a space that feels like yours – no hotel lobby, no crowds, no interrupting the vibe. It’s the ultimate island decompress. and it feels very European.
Villas are also often an incredible value in St. Barths when you’re traveling as a couple + another couple, a family, or a small group of friends. For the price of two or three hotel rooms, you can get a full luxury home with a pool for the same price as you would one room at a hotel. Huge!!!
If you’re considering a villa for your next St. Barths trip – Villa La Route du Rhum should be at the top of your list. Here’s why.
Where is Villa La Route du Rhum? (The Best Location on St. Barths for a Villa)
Villa La Route du Rhum is located in Saint-Jean !!!! the hills above Saint Jean, which, in my opinion, is the best neighborhood to stay in on St. Barths.
Why Saint Jean? It’s the heart of the island. You’re:
- Walking/quick-drive distance to St. Jean Beach, one of St. Barths’ most famous beaches and home to iconic spots like Nikki Beach, Le Gherite, Pearl Beach, and the legendary Eden Rock hotel
- Surrounded by great shopping (think St. Barths’ best boutiques along the Pelican Plage complex) I was obsessed with the shopping that was only a walk away!
- Right near amazing restaurants: Nikki Beach, La Plage, Kinugawa, La Guérite St. Barth, and so many more are all minutes away
- Central to the whole island: 5-10 minutes from Gustavia for shopping and nightlife, and an easy drive to Shell Beach, Saline, Gouverneur, and Colombier
And because the villa is up in the hills, you get the most INSANE view. The kind of panoramic, sparkling-blue-water view that makes your jaw drop every time you walk onto the deck. Literally.
You’re looking directly out at St. Jean Bay and the iconic Eden Rock, which is just the view in St. Barths.
The Villa: What to Expect
Villa La Route du Rhum was designed with outdoor living in mind, and that becomes obvious the second you walk in. Sliding glass doors open the living room to the deck, turning the whole space into one seamless indoor-outdoor lounge. (but, if you’re traveling with kids, don’t worry, they lock up VERY well and my kids could not open them).
I was obsessed with the decor here. It has CHARACTER! Turquoise everywhere with pops of vibrant Caribbean color… every corner of the villa feels breezy, bright, and alive. So Caribbean. So St. Barths.
The Infinity Pool & Outdoor Deck
This is where you’ll be spending your time. The infinity pool overlooks St. Jean Bay and seems to melt right into the Caribbean in the distance. There are sunbeds with umbrellas, an ocean-view cabana, multiple seating and dining areas, an outdoor shower, and a gas BBQ for sunset dinners under the palms. There’s also a beautiful outdoor dining table that we loved to have breakfast at! The sunlight here in the mornings is just beautiful.
Picture: a morning swim as the sun comes up over the bay, lazy afternoons with a rosé in hand and a sunset over your infinity pool. That’s the Villa La Route du Rhum vibe.
The Bedrooms
The villa sleeps up to 6 guests across 3 bedrooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom. Every bedroom has:
- King-size bed
- Air conditioning in the bedrooms (not in the main areas, though)
- Crisp linens, plush towels, a hairdryer
- A beautifully designed ensuite bathroom with a spacious shower
One bedroom has views of the infinity pool and ocean, while the others open to lush, tropical garden views, all equally dreamy in their own way. Two of the bedrooms open to private outdoor seating areas (one even has its own private entrance), and one includes a writing desk if you’ve got a remote-work day in the mix.
The Kitchen & Living Areas
The ground-floor main living area is open on two sides, framing the ocean views, with a bar for sunset cocktails and a sound system to set the mood. The open-plan kitchen is fully equipped with a Nespresso, wine fridge, everything you need to cook (or to have a private chef come in and do the cooking for you!)
Upstairs, there’s a second, more tucked-away lounge/library with a daybed for reading, a dining table perfect for game nights, a desk for working, and a smart TV for lazy movie nights.
The Private Gym
There is a little gym on property if you want to get your workout in! It is small but has a home trainer, elliptical, dumbbells, and a mirror wall. Starting the day with a quiet workout before you get the day started? perfect.
What The Villa Has On-Site:
- Infinity pool with ocean views
- Private gym
- Daily housekeeping (amazing!)
- Private parking
- Oceanfront lounge area
- Beach chairs and umbrellas for your beach days
- Outdoor shower
- Sunbeds with umbrellas
- Ocean view cabana
- Multiple seating and dining areas
- Gas BBQ
- Smart TV, WiFi, sound system
- Optional laundry service (30 euros)

What Makes Villa La Route du Rhum So Special
I’ve stayed in a lot of villas around the world, and here’s what sets this one apart:
1. The view!!!! You are looking at St. Jean Bay and Eden Rock! It’s the view that defines St. Barths, and from this villa’s deck, it feels like yours.
2. The privacy. Even though you’re minutes from everything, up in the hills of Les Hauts de Saint-Jean you feel completely tucked away. It’s just you, the trade winds, the turtles in the garden (yes, turtles!), and the sound of the ocean.
3. The design. It’s designed beautifully with a real sense of place of St. Barths! Caribbean colors, natural light, a feeling of breathing the island in the second you walk through the door. It doesn’t feel like a sterile luxury rental in the least. It was a family’s vacation home turned into a rental, so it feels like a home, but one where someone thought of every detail for you.
4. The service. Daily housekeeping, a dedicated villa manager (Dani, who takes care of you!), and the ability to arrange private chefs, in-villa spa treatments, and anything else you can think of. It’s hotel-level service with villa-level privacy.
5. The perfect size for couples OR a small group. Three bedrooms means it’s ideal for:
- A couple who wants tons of space to themselves (with room for guests to visit)
- Two or three couples traveling together
- A family who wants more space than a hotel (we used one bedroom for us, one for our kids, and one for our nanny!)
- A girls’ trip with your best friends
Is it safe?
St. Barths is INCREDIBLY safe – like, no one on the island locks their doors safe. This was something I always consider when deciding a villa versus a hotel and St. Barths next-level safety is one of the main reasons why villas are such a pro move in St. Barths!!!

When to Visit St. Barths
St. Barths high season runs roughly November through April, with Christmas/New Year being the most famously expensive and packed window on the island. For better rates and still-beautiful weather, I personally love late April into June – the island has quieted down, the weather is gorgeous, and everything feels a bit more relaxed. Villa La Route du Rhum is available year-round, with a minimum stay of 5 nights.
The Story Behind the Name
The villa’s name pays tribute to the Route du Rhum – a legendary solo transatlantic sailing race that started in 1978, going from Saint-Malo in France to Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. It was created to celebrate Caribbean rum and has since become one of the most iconic races in the sailing world, a symbol of freedom, adventure, and the wind-in-your-sails romance of the Caribbean.
The villa carries that same spirit. The sea, the wind, a little bit of rum in the air, and the total ease of island living on St. Barths.
Villa or a Hotel in St. Barths?
Personally – I’d go villa! Or potentially both if you have enough time. If you’re looking for a luxury private villa in St. Barths with an great but tucked away location, infinity pool with the best view on the island, and all the little touches that make a trip feel truly special, this is the one.
It’s perfect for couples, friends, or small families who want the space and privacy of a villa with the hotel-level ease of daily housekeeping, and who want to be in the thick of the Saint Jean action without sacrificing privacy or views.
I can’t wait to go back!!!!
