How to Get a Table at Chubby Fish in Charleston, From a Local

Ask anyone their favorite restaurant in Charleston, South Carolina, and one name comes up again and again: Chubby Fish. This intimate neighborhood gem, owned by husband-and-wife team Chef James London and Yoyo Ji, was ranked one of the TOP 50 Best Restaurant Experiences in the USA by the New York Times, and is one of the hardest seats in town to score, for good reason. The dock-to-table menu is insanely fresh, wildly creative, and always changing. But there’s a catch: Chubby Fish doesn’t take reservations. At all.

So how do you get into Chubby Fish? Let me break it down.

Why Is Chubby Fish So Popular?

Simply put, yes – it’s that good. Chef James London – a James Beard semifinalist – has put together a seasonal, local menu that’s a foodie’s dream without ever feeling pretentious. Think tuna belly toast that melts in your mouth, on crusty homemade sourdough, the cult-favorite caviar sandwich (we often order two more instead of dessert), and sleeper hits like poblano cacio e pepe cauliflower. Specials rotate nightly, so you might find yourself trying braised grouper cheeks or an inventive crudo you’ll be dreaming about long after.

And unlike some fine-dining spots, you won’t leave hungry or broke. This is the Charleston food scene at its best – Elevated, but never snobby.

What’s the Vibe at Chubby Fish?

The space is small, buzzy, and electric. Floor-to-ceiling velvet drapes hide the dining room until the doors open at 5pm, and when they do, the energy is contagious. It feels like you’re in on a local secret.

Hospitality is another big part of what makes dinner here so special! The staff is warm, welcoming, and genuinely loves being there. You feel more like a guest in James and Yoyo’s home than a diner at one of the hottest restaurants in Charleston.

Does Chubby Fish Take Reservations?

No, they don’t. and that’s what makes the experience both exciting and a little stressful. Chubby Fish does not take reservations online or by phone. The only way to snag a table is to line up before the doors open! And by reading this post.

What Time Should I Line Up at Chubby Fish?

Locals know: if you want in, you need to line up early. Guests usually begin arriving around 3:30–4:00 pm for the 5:00 pm opening. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Before 3:30 pm on weekends: Best chance at your choice of seatings (5pm, 6:30pm, or 8:30pm).

  • By 4:00 pm on weeknights: Likely to secure an early or mid seating.

  • After 4:30 pm: You may still get a later table (8:30 pm), but options will be limited.

The amaaazing hostess (shoutout to Kate!) takes names for each seating as the line moves inside. If you’re early, you can choose to sit right away or put your name down for later in the evening.

What’s the Best Seating at Chubby Fish?

It depends on your vibe. Personally, my husband and I love the 6:30 pm seating. it gives us time to grab cocktails at Seahorse, the sexy little bar next door run by the same team. Since Chubby Fish is beer-and-wine only, Seahorse is the perfect pre-dinner cocktail stop.

Tips for Waiting in Line at Chubby Fish

  • Bring entertainment. Books, cards, or a good podcast (I knocked out emails while waiting!).

  • Bring shade. Charleston sun is no joke. An umbrella or hat goes a long way.

  • Come off-season. Winter and weekdays (Tuesday–Wednesday) are the easiest times.

  • Go with a small group. Larger parties are harder to seat, but not impossible!
