The 4 Best Lake Como Hotels for Families With Toddlers (From a Luxury Travel Expert Who Books Them Every Summer)
The question I get most often from clients planning Lake Como with a little one in tow is some version of this: can we really pull this off with a toddler, or is this a “wait a few years” kind of trip?
My honest answer, every single time: yes, you can absolutely do Lake Como with a toddler, and it might end up being the family trip you remember forever. The lake itself is calming. The food is forgiving of even the pickiest two-year-old palate (pasta, gelato, more gelato). And the boats, the pools, the gardens, the ferry rides all turn an ordinary afternoon into something that feels special for your kids. And the hotels (when you pick the right ones) make life with a little one in tow at Lake Como feel surprisingly seamless, and verrrrry La Dolce Vita.
I plan Lake Como trips for families each summer, and here are my four favorite picks for families with toddlers at Lake Como, what makes them each so special, plus exactly how to book so you get the very best rate + my complimentary VIP Jetset perks at each one!
1. Grand Hotel Tremezzo (Tremezzina)
Best for: families who want a true Como classic that genuinely loves having kids on property.
The Tremezzo has been welcoming guests since 1910, and it shows in the way only family-owned grand hotels can show it. The Art Nouveau bones have been lovingly polished rather than gutted, the longtime staff know returning guests by name, and the front terrace looks straight across the water to Bellagio. You sit there with a coffee and the morning ferries pull in and out and your toddler is mesmerized for a full thirty minutes (a parenting miracle in itself).
For families, the pool situation alone is a reason to book. There are three: the famous floating pool on the lake, set right next to T Beach (a real sandy lido that toddlers refuse to leave), the heated Flowers Pool tucked into the gardens with a lifeguard always on duty, and an adults-only indoor infinity pool inside the spa for the hour when you finally sneak away.
Cribs are complimentary. Extra beds for kids under 12 are free. Many rooms have connecting configurations on request, which is the single most important detail when you are traveling with a toddler who naps at noon. Five restaurants on property means you have options on the rainy day when nothing else is going right, and T Pizza is the one your toddler will ask for by name. The T Spa is run in partnership with Santa Maria Novella and is worth a real treatment if you can line up a sitter.
If you want a true bucket-list moment with the little one, ask about a private cruise on Ruy, the hotel’s 1961 Venetian wooden motor launch. There is something specific about a toddler asleep on your lap as a wooden boat hums past the lakeside villas at golden hour.
Jetset Christina VIP Perks at Grand Hotel Tremezzo:
- Room upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
- Daily full breakfast for two, served in the hotel restaurant
- $100 USD resort credit, to be used during your stay
- Early check-in and late check-out, subject to availability

2. Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni (Bellagio)
Best for: families who want to walk out the front door into the prettiest town on the lake.
Villa Serbelloni is the only 5-star deluxe hotel in Bellagio itself, perched at the very tip of the promontory where the lake forks. If you have ever Googled Bellagio and wanted to live inside the photo, this is how you do it. Originally built as a private villa in 1850 and operated as a hotel since 1873, it has stayed in the same family for three generations, and that continuity shows in the service.
For families, this is one of the most thoughtfully equipped properties on the lake. There is a dedicated indoor children’s pool with a slide, a separate adult indoor lap pool, and a beautiful outdoor pool overlooking the water. A small kids’ playground sits tucked into the gardens with swings, slides, and a climbing house. Weather permitting, there is also a diving platform and trampoline anchored out on the lake itself, which older siblings love and parents have to physically pull them off of at the end of the day. Cribs are complimentary, kids stay free, and the concierge can arrange childcare.
For the grown-up indulgences, dinner at Mistral is the move. The fine-dining restaurant has been led for years by Ettore Bocchia, a chef known for his work with molecular Italian cuisine. It currently appears in the Michelin Guide, though I’d recommend confirming the current star status closer to your travel dates since this has shifted in recent years. The hotel’s wine cellar is one of the most renowned in European hospitality (the property has cited specific global rankings in the past, which I’d double-check at the time of your booking if it matters to you).
One logistical note: Villa Serbelloni operates seasonally, generally April through November. It is not a Christmas-in-Como property.
Jetset Christina VIP Perks at Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni:
- Room upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
- Daily full breakfast for two, served in the Royal Hall
- €50 restaurant credit at Mistral, or €50 spa treatment credit (once per room, per stay)
- Welcome drink on arrival
- Early check-in and late check-out, subject to availability

3. Villa d’Este (Cernobbio)
Best for: families who want old-world Italian grandeur, and multigenerational groups who need real space to spread out.
If we are going to talk about iconic, we are going to talk about Villa d’Este. The estate dates to the 16th century, has operated as a hotel since 1873, and walking onto the property genuinely feels like stepping into a film. Marble staircases, frescoed ceilings, twenty-five acres of Italian Renaissance gardens, the famous floating pool anchored out on the lake. There is nowhere else quite like it.
For families, the property runs a Kids Club with a dedicated program of games, films, and a kids’ menu, plus a separate kids’ pool. Babysitting can be arranged so you can sneak off for a Veranda dinner without watching the clock. (Worth verifying the current age range and operating hours for the Kids Club with me at the time of booking, since seasonal programming can shift.) Honestly though, the property is so vast and so storied that your toddler will spend hours just exploring the gardens, watching the ferries pull in and out, and chasing pigeons on the lakeside terrace. You almost don’t need the structured programming.
The hidden ace at Villa d’Este is the private villas on the grounds. Villa Cima, Villa Malakoff, and Villa Sola Cabiati can be booked for families and multigenerational groups who want everyone under one roof while still having privacy. If you are traveling with grandparents or in-laws and want everyone together but separate, this is one of the only properties on the lake that can pull it off elegantly. Worth asking about specifically when you inquire.
Jetset Christina VIP Perks at Villa d’Este:
- Room upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
- Daily breakfast for two, served in the restaurant
- $100 USD food and beverage credit, to be used during your stay
- For suite bookings: welcome amenity of premium Champagne, fruit, flowers, and friandises
- Early check-in and late check-out, subject to availability

4. Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como (Blevio)
Best for: families who want modern, serene luxury and seamless toddler logistics.
If Villa d’Este is the grand dame of Lake Como, the Mandarin Oriental is her cool younger sister. It opened as one of the brand’s first European resort properties, set on a private botanical park that spills down to the water, with nine villa-style buildings tucked into landscaped pathways. The mood is calmer, quieter, more contemporary. Less “Italy of your daydreams,” more “Italy if your daydreams had perfect taste and a great spa.”
The floating infinity pool on the lake is the kind of view you take one photo of and then put your phone away for the rest of the afternoon. There is also an indoor pool, a serious spa with thermal areas, and two restaurants: L’ARIA for fine dining with panoramic lake views, and CO.MO Bar & Bistrot for the relaxed pizza-oven-in-the-garden kind of nights that simply work better when there’s a tired two-year-old at the table.
For families, the rooms and suites offer connecting configurations, which I cannot recommend enough when you want to read your book on the couch while your toddler is asleep on the other side of a wall rather than two feet away. Bed rails, cribs, and high chairs are all on hand. Supervised childcare can be arranged through the concierge. And the property runs a courtesy car into Como town year-round, which makes the occasional change of scenery effortless.
Jetset Christina VIP Perks at Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como:
- Room upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
- Daily full breakfast for two
- $100 USD food and beverage or spa credit, once per stay
- Personalized welcome amenity
- Early check-in and late check-out, subject to availability

Frequently Asked Questions About Lake Como With a Toddler
When is the best time to visit Lake Como with a toddler? Late May through early July, and September, are the sweet spots. The weather is warm enough for the pools, the lake is in full bloom, and the crowds are noticeably thinner than the peak August weeks. Several of the hotels above operate seasonally, so check operating dates at the time of booking.
How do you get to Lake Como with a young child? Most of my families fly into Milan Malpensa and arrange a private transfer to the lake, which takes about an hour and fifteen minutes by car. I can arrange car seats with the transfer company in advance, so you don’t have to travel with one. The train from Milan works for some families, but with a toddler and luggage, a private transfer is almost always worth the cost.
Is Lake Como walkable with a stroller? Sort of. The lakefront promenades in Bellagio, Menaggio, and Varenna are stroller-friendly. The historic centers with their cobblestones and stairs are not. I always recommend bringing a sturdy, lightweight stroller and a soft carrier as a backup.
Do I need a rental car at Lake Como with a toddler? In most cases, no. Boats, taxis, and hotel transfers are how you get around, and parking in the lakeside towns is notoriously tricky. Save yourself the headache.
Which Lake Como hotel is best for our family? The most honest answer is: it depends on the age of your kids, your travel style, and whether other family members are joining. This is exactly the conversation I have with every client when we start planning. Send me a note and we’ll find the right fit.
Summing up: Which Lake Como Hotel Is Right for Your Family?
- Best for a true Lake Como icon that genuinely welcomes kids: Grand Hotel Tremezzo
- Best for staying in the heart of the cutest town on the lake: Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, Bellagio
- Best for old-world grandeur and multigenerational trips: Villa d’Este
- Best for modern, serene luxury and seamless toddler logistics: Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como
