The Best Places to Travel in April

Ah, April. You’ve made it through the last stretch of winter, you might even have already filed your taxes, and you deserve a break!! But where should you go?? The weather is good almost everywhere around the world in April, with the exception of Southeast Asia, where in some areas like Thailand this is their hottest time of year. But most places around the world, April is a sweet spot where the summer crowds haven’t arrived yet, but temperatures are pleasant and prices are low. While Americans might have to wait a bit longer to visit a few of these destinations in 2021, there are still plenty of places that are ready to welcome you for that much needed R&R.

THE BEST DESTINATIONS TO TRAVEL IN APRIL

Oaxaca, Mexico

Oaxaca seemingly has everything that you could hope for in a trip to Mexico-great food, beaches, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and even hot springs! In Oaxaca, the weather is almost always agreeable. Colorful open air craft markets and sun faded cantinas that line the cobblestone streets. The food and Mezcal scene have exploded in recent years, ensuring a vibrant and authentic culinary experience. Make sure you visit the Hierve El Agua thermal pools and calcified waterfalls and try some traditional Mole while you’re at it! There is plenty of rich history and culture to be uncovered as you wander the old streets and explore the ancient pyramids. As for where to stay, for the most instagrammable hotel go with Hotel Los Amantes or City Centro Oaxaca, and for a classic boutique hotel set in a restored 16th century convent go with Quinta Real Oaxaca.

No covid test is required for entry to Mexico, but you’ll just need a negative rapid or PCR test to re-enter the United States, which are readily available at local clinics and hotels.

Hierve El Agua

Quinta Real Oaxaca

Dubai, UAE

Once just a small fishing village, this multi-cultural city is now the most booming and glamorous metropolis in the world! From the best shopping, to the world’s tallest building, to relaxing at trendy beach clubs like the One&Only, and exploring the gorgeous desert, you’ll be hard pressed to fit it all in!

For the most luxurious of glamping experiences, head to the desert for a night in the Al Maha Desert Resort where you can watch camels meander by as you swim in your private plunge pool. If you want bragging rights, stay in arguably the most famous of any hotel in Dubai, the Burj Al Arab, a global icon of luxury known for its innovative architecture, Michelin-star dining experiences and extensive pool/spa space overlooking the ocean. If you’re traveling with a group of friends, think about renting this luxury beach-front penthouse right on the iconic Palm island!

Current restrictions require a negative Covid test within 96-hours of flight and travel insurance.

The U.S Virgin Islands

No passport? No problem. If you’re looking for a tropical destination without all the hassle of customs, return COVID tests, ect. The U.S. Virgin Islands check all the boxes. You’ll have three islands to choose from-St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. and St. John, all of which have their own charm. St. Thomas has one of the best beaches in the world and is known for its nightlife, St. John has pristine nature at its US National Park and St. Croix has an amazing culinary scene…pick your poison! If you’re looking for a honeymoon destination, go with the Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas and book yourself a spa day! If you’re traveling with a group or family, my favorite way to do it is by renting a luxury sailboat or yacht (complete with a captain and chef!!!).

Negative PCR test within 5 days of flight required for entry, however no test is needed to re-enter the U.S.

Moab, Utah

Known for its gorgeous red rocks in Arches National Park, Moab is the perfect spot for a long weekend in the outdoors or a great stop to add on an out west road trip! April brings warmer temperatures for exploring Arches and Canyonlands National parks, whether on foot or on a 4×4! You’ll want to hit Delicate Arch, Dead Point and maybe even balanced rock along the Arches scenic drive. Restore your energy at the end of each day at the Sorrel River Ranch spa and then get cozy in your own private wooden cabin. If you’re looking for total nature immersion, go with Under Canvas Moab for the ultimate luxury glamping experience!

Under Canvas Moab

Anguilla

This tiny beautiful Caribbean island is located just 12 miles north of St. Maarten. Anguilla is home to some of the most luxury resorts and some of the best upscale dining in the region while still maintaining its authenticity. Boasting long stretches of pristine beaches and laid back luxury, lounge all day at the Four Seasons Resort and Residences or Cap Juluca for white-washed luxurious Mediterranean vibes. One of the fantastic things about this island is the embargo on cruise ships and casinos, which keeps the vibe exclusive and private. Think long relaxing days in the sun or at the spa, followed by live music and al fresco dining at night!

Negative COVID test within 5 days of arrival and tests upon arrival until March 6th, 2021.

Kyoto, Japan

April is the ideal month to visit Japan because the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. While Japan is still not open to foreign nationals, I had to include this for future reference-start planning that spring 2022 getaway that you’ve always dreamed of! Visit the bamboo forest, the ornate buddhist temples and maybe even take a high speed train! The Ramen alone is worth the trip, trust me. For a luxurious oasis that pays homage to ancient Japanese traditions, stay at the Ritz-Carlton Kyoto where you are served tea at check-in and you can dine at their Michelin-starred restaurant Mizuki. For something a bit easier on your wallet, go with the upscale and modern Hotel Kanra, where you will be offered a staff-guided tour of the city and you can indulge in a traditional Japanese wooden bath.

Bamboo Forest

Scottsdale, Arizona

This trending desert destination has a WHOLE lot to offer. From insane resorts, day pool party vibes, beautiful hiking trails like Camelback mountain or hitting the links, there is something for everyone in Scottsdale! Make sure you have a boozy brunch, check out the local hangout at The Churchill (an open-concept market of local food vendors), and then head to Postino Wine Cafe for charcuterie and a few glasses! Maybe even do a hot air balloon ride to take in the desert views! If you’re looking for world class luxury, look no further than the Canyon Suites at The Pheonician Hotel. A hotel within a hotel, with its own private pool and lounges separate from the rest of the sprawling property, be prepared to be greeted by name wherever you go, have welcome gifts waiting for you upon arrival, and pre-stocked backpacks for your hiking excursions! They think of everything! I also love the Omni Scottsdale Monte Lucia, an absolute oasis at the footsteps of some of the best hiking in town. Even if you don’t stay at Omni, you should check out the award-winning spa!

Oahu, Hawaii

While there is never a time where there are no tourists in Hawaii, April is definitely one of the biggest lulls of the year, which is hard to believe given the incredible 70-80 degree day temperatures paired with cool evenings and minimal rainfall. Hike ancient craters, take surf lessons in Waikiki, taste the freshest Poke in the world and slow down on island time. For resort life, one of my favorites right on Waikiki Beach is the Moana Surfrider. Or for an epic spot slightly outside the hustle and bustle of Honolulu, head to the Four Seasons Resort Oahu, or for more seclusion head to the North Shore and stay at this epic oceanfront home.

Don’t forget to pack your Waikiki print Watercolors bikini!

Negative PCR test within 72 hours of flight required for entry.

The Four Seasons Oahu

Jordan

Jordan is a gorgeous and diverse destination perfect for all you adventure-seeking jetsetters! Jordan has so much to offer, from the astounding Dead Sea, to the ancient city ruins of Petra and the desert stargazing in Wadi Rum. Spring time is the best time to travel to Jordan if you’re an avid hiker. The country’s desert landscape transforms into a blanket of wildflowers, and the forests are lush and green! You can even go scuba diving in the Red Sea! After all the adventure you’ll want to relax in luxurious accommodation like the Four Seasons Hotel Amman!

Negative PCR test within 72 hours of flight and a second test upon arrival administered at the airport..

Four Seasons Amman

San Diego, California

For my sun seekers who aren’t ready to leave the country, San Diego has got you covered! April is the start of “sunny season” in San Diego, where you’ll find beaches, a bustling craft brewery scene, and countless outdoor attractions to keep you busy. Did I mention the Mexican food?? Head to the Little Italy neighborhood for trendy restaurants and cocktail bars, or Point-Loma for boutique shopping and laid-back hippie vibes. Stay at The Pearl Hotel in Point Loma for retro-chic feels or head a bit further north to Cal-La-Vie Hotel and Spa, where you might just think you’ve stepped into the French Countryside. If you prefer a private beach-front home-base, check out this luxe resort-style home on the beach in Del Mar.
