You are not hopping between towns and sight-seeing a ton in Maui. You are picking a stretch of coast, a pool, a beach, and a culture of aloha hospitality, and then you are living in it! The good news is that the best luxury resorts in Maui cluster into two zones, and once you understand the difference between them, the whole island gets a lot easier to plan. Wailea, on the sunny south shore, is resort row: manicured, reliably dry, and lined with the marquee names. Kapalua, up on the lusher west side, is quieter, greener, and a little more tucked away. I book both constantly, for different travelers.

Wailea vs Kapalua: Which Side of Maui Is Right for You

Wailea is where most of my clients land, and for good reason. It sits in the rain shadow on the south shore, so it is the driest, sunniest corner of the island, and it has the highest concentration of true five-star resorts anywhere in Hawaii. Four of my six picks are here. The beaches are gentle and swimmable, there is a walkable coastal path connecting the resorts, and the vibe is polished South Maui at its best.

Kapalua, on the far northwest tip past Kaanapali, is greener, hillier, and more low-key. The pace is slower, the crowds are thinner, and Kapalua Bay itself is one of the most beautiful protected swimming beaches in the country. If Wailea is the see-and-be-seen side, Kapalua is the exhale.

My general rule: first-time visitors, honeymooners who want dining and energy nearby, and families who want the biggest pools should base in Wailea. Repeat visitors, couples craving quiet, and anyone who prioritizes a jaw-dropping swimming beach over resort scale will love Kapalua.

Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea

Best for: the couple or family who wants flawless service and the most polished resort on the island!!!

This is the one I book more than any other property on Maui, and it earns it. The Four Seasons sits right on Wailea Beach with 383 rooms and suites, and the thing that sets it apart is not any single feature, it is the consistency. The service here is genuinely the best on the island, warm without being fussy, and the whole place feels effortless in a way the bigger resorts down the road cannot quite match.

Adults get the Serenity Pool, a 21-and-over infinity pool with a swim-up bar and cabanas that hangs over the ocean, which is exactly where I want to be at 3pm with no children in sight. Families get the main Fountain Pool and a keiki pool with a small slide (my toddlers love!), plus the complimentary Kids For All Seasons program for ages five and up, which runs daily and is genuinely so well-run and amazing. The dining lineup is a real strength: Spago from Wolfgang Puck, the oceanfront Italian at Ferraro’s Bar e Ristorante (get a sunset table, it is one of the best on the island), DUO for steak and seafood, and the new KOMO for sushi.

Hotel Wailea, Relais & Chateaux

Best for: honeymooners and couples who want adults-only, intimate, and romantic, with no kids in sight.

Every other resort on this list is family-friendly. This one is deliberately not, and that is exactly its appeal. The Hotel Wailea is adults-only (18 and up), a member of Relais & Chateaux, and it is the most romantic property on Maui by a wide margin. It sits up on a hillside about 300 feet above the coast, across 15 acres of gardens and waterfalls, with elevated ocean views that look out over three neighboring islands. It is all-suite, just 72 suites, so it feels small and private in the best way.

The honest caveat is right there in the location: this is not a beachfront resort. There is no beach of its own, so you drive or shuttle down to the Wailea beaches, which are just a few minutes away. What you get in exchange is the intimacy and the view, and a serene adults-only infinity pool that never feels crowded. The dining is a genuine destination, with The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea (the only Relais & Chateaux restaurant in Hawaii), and the almost impossible-to-book Treehouse experience, a private multi-course dinner served in a custom ocean-view treehouse. Best for: the design-forward couple or stylish family who wants the most photogenic pools in Wailea.

The Andaz is the coolest-looking resort in Wailea, full stop. It sits on Mokapu Beach with 320 rooms, suites, and villas, and its signature feature is a set of three tiered infinity pools that cascade down toward the sand. That view, pools spilling into ocean, is the shot everyone takes here, and it earns the hype. The aesthetic is sleek, modern, and minimalist in a way that feels more boutique than big-resort, even though it is a full-service property.

The vibe skews a little younger and buzzier than the Four Seasons or Fairmont, which honeymooners and design lovers tend to adore. Dining is a real strength: Ka’ana Kitchen does a farm-to-table breakfast spread that is worth waking up for, and Morimoto Maui brings the Iron Chef’s Japanese cooking right to the property (I always confirm celebrity-chef restaurant hours live before a trip, since they can shift, but it has been running). Best for: families and multigenerational groups who want space, because every room is a suite.

This is my quiet-hero pick for families, and the reason is simple: the Fairmont Kea Lani is Hawaii’s only all-suite oceanfront resort. Every standard accommodation is a full one-bedroom suite, which means a separate bedroom with a door that closes and a living room where the parents can actually exist after bedtime. Anyone who has traveled with little kids knows exactly how much that one detail matters. There are 413 suites plus 37 two- and three-story oceanfront villas with private plunge pools, and the whole property got a top-to-bottom renovation completed through 2023, so it feels fresh and bright.

It fronts Polo Beach, which is one of the calmer stretches in Wailea, and it has both an adult pool and a family pool with a waterslide, so everyone in the group is covered. The Keiki Lani Kids Club runs for ages five to twelve with real Hawaiian cultural programming, and the newly rebuilt Willow Stream Spa is excellent. Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort

Best for: families who want the most spectacular pool complex in Hawaii, hands down.

If you are traveling with kids and the pool is going to make or break the trip, this is your resort. The Grand Wailea sprawls across roughly 40 acres of Wailea Beach with around 780 rooms, and the centerpiece is the Wailea Canyon Activity Pool, a genuinely wild multi-level water complex with nine pools across six levels, a series of intertwining slides, a whitewater rapids run, a Tarzan pool with a rope swing, caves, waterfalls, and the only water elevator I have ever seen at a hotel. My kids would happily never leave it. It is not an exaggeration to say this is the single biggest family draw of any resort on Maui.

This is a big, busy, full-scale resort, so set your expectations accordingly. It has the energy of a destination in itself, which is exactly what some families want and exactly what some couples want to avoid. The good news for grown-ups is that the adults-only Hibiscus Serenity Pool (ages 18 and up) is a beautiful, calm counterweight, tiled in hundreds of thousands of glass mosaics, and the newly rebuilt Kilolani Spa, which reopened in 2024 after a major renovation, is now the largest spa in Hawaii. The kids’ program, the Grand Wailea Keiki Club, runs for ages five to twelve. Dining ranges from the over-the-water Humuhumunukunukuapua’a to Nobu, and the resort’s collection of Fernando Botero bronze sculptures gives the public spaces a genuine sense of place.

My honest take: this is a family resort first. If your ideal Maui day is built around an epic pool and easy energy for the kids, nothing else on the island competes. If you want hushed and intimate, look elsewhere on this list.

Ritz-Carlton at Kapalua

Best for: families and couples who want space, a real Hawaiian sense of place, and championship golf on the quieter, greener side of the island, above a stunning beach.

If you want to be on West Maui and away from the Wailea crowds, this is the one. The Ritz sits on 54 oceanfront acres up in Kapalua, and it came out of a $100 million transformation that touched every guest room, all the restaurants, and the public spaces. There are 466 rooms and suites, including 107 Residential Suites with full kitchens, separate living rooms, and marble bathrooms, which is why I book it constantly for families and for multigenerational groups who want room to spread out and the option to cook a few meals in.

The setting is the star. The resort’s beach is D.T. Fleming, which has been named the best beach in America, and the whole property looks out over that stretch of coast. One honest logistical note: the hotel sits up on a bluff (it was intentionally moved inland to protect the Honokahua Preservation Site, a sacred wahi pana the resort still cares for today), so the beach is a short downhill walk rather than steps from your lanai. The 10,000-square-foot pool is built in a fleur-de-lis shape with waterfalls and lava rock, and there are seven cabanas with their own attendants if you want to make a day of it. Kids do Ambassadors of the Environment, the Jean-Michel Cousteau eco program for ages five to fourteen, with beach cleanups and stargazing. Dining runs from The Banyan Tree, the signature restaurant, to Ulana Terrace, the Alaloa Lounge, and the Burger Shack down by the pool. And you’re on the Kapalua Resort, which means both the Plantation and Bay courses, with the Plantation hosting the PGA Tour’s season opener every January.

Because Kapalua is greener and cooler than Wailea, you may see a passing shower more often, which is the trade-off for all that lushness. For couples who want quiet and families who want space and a spectacular beach, the Ritz is worth every penny.

How many days do I need in Maui?
I recommend five to seven nights. That gives you enough time to actually settle into your resort, do the Road to Hana or a Haleakala sunrise, get in a couple of proper beach and pool days, and not feel like you spent the whole trip in transit. If Maui is one leg of a multi-island Hawaii trip, four nights is the minimum I would give it.

Is Maui okay to visit right now after the wildfires?
Yes, and visitors are genuinely welcomed. The resort areas in this guide, Wailea and Kapalua, were not affected by the 2023 fires and are operating normally. The historic core of Lahaina town is still rebuilding and largely closed to visitors, so I always recommend confirming current conditions with me before you book, and traveling with respect for a community still in recovery.
