If you’re planning a Greek Isles honeymoon, there’s no doubt that Santorini should be on your list. Yes, it’s one of the most popular islands in Greece – but for good reason!!!!! And I know you’ve seen things saying it’s crowded but I’m here to tell you, yes, there are places with crowds, but it will NOT ruin your trip. You just have to know where to stay!!!! If you’re wondering which village, and which hotel, actually delivers the Santorini I have been dreaming about, but without the crowds? That’s what I’m here for.
Santorini is not a beach honeymoon in the way the Maldives or the Caribbean is. The famous white-and-blue villages sit on the rim of a flooded volcanic caldera, hundreds of feet above the water, and the beaches (black sand, red sand, dramatic and worth a day trip) are on the completely opposite side of the island. So the whole draw here, the thing you are really paying for, is a suite carved into the cliff with a private plunge pool hanging over that caldera, a sunset that turns the whole sky the color of a peach Bellini, and dinner on a terrace where you take one photo and then put the phone away for the rest of the night.
I have spent years booking Greece for honeymooners, and I have perfected the ultimate itineraries (let me know if you want me to plan a custom one for you!) which villages are best for which couples, and where the view is genuinely once-in-a-lifetime versus merely very pretty. First, Understand the Villages (This Matters More Than the Hotel)
The single biggest Santorini honeymoon mistake is booking a gorgeous hotel in the wrong village. The caldera-view towns each have a distinct personality, so start here.
Oia is the icon. This is the postcard: white Greek houses cascading down the cliff, blue domes, and the sunset that draws a genuine crowd every single evening. It is the most beautiful and the most romantic, and it is also the most crowded, especially the two hours around sunset when day-trippers pour in. If you want the quintessential Santorini and you are willing to share it, Oia is where many of the best hotels are.
Imerovigli sits at the highest point of the caldera, just above Fira, and it is my quiet-luxury pick. Fewer crowds, arguably the best head-on caldera views on the island, and a serene, residential calm that Oia loses at sunset. You give up a little of the shops-and-strolling energy, but for a honeymoon that is often a feature, not a bug.
Firostefani is the mellow middle ground, a short flat walk from Fira with lovely views and a fraction of the foot traffic. Fira is the capital: liveliest, most restaurants and nightlife, more cruise-ship bustle, and generally better value, but it is the least honeymoon-serene of the group. For most couples I steer toward Oia for the drama or Imerovigli for the calm.
Katikies Santorini: The Iconic Oia Infinity-Pool Fantasy
Best for: Couples who want the most photographed, most quintessentially Santorini hotel in Oia and are booking the honeymoon of their Pinterest board.
Katikies is the one you have seen a hundred times without knowing its name: those cascading whitewashed infinity pools spilling toward the caldera, all curves and arches and impossibly blue water. It is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, it is adults-only (guests 13 and up), and it is set right on the Oia cliffs, which means you are steps from the sunset without needing to fight the main-street crowds to get there.
The property is intimate, around 34 rooms and suites, and the design is pure Cycladic fantasy done at a very high level. Categories run from beautiful cliffside rooms up through honeymoon suites, and the top accommodations, like the Master Suite, come with a private heated plunge pool over the caldera. I want to be honest here: not every room has a private pool, so if a plunge pool of your own is non-negotiable (and on a honeymoon, I think it should be), tell me and I will book you into the right category rather than letting you find out on arrival. Dining is anchored by the hotel’s Mediterranean fine-dining restaurant and a champagne bar built for exactly the kind of evening you are picturing, and there is a spa for couples treatments.
The trade-off with Katikies is that it is popular and it knows it, so it books up far in advance for peak dates and it is priced at the top of the market. But if your dream is that specific stacked-infinity-pool image, this is the real thing, not a knockoff.

Canaves Oia: The Polished Oia Standard-Bearer (With a Family Option)
Best for: Couples who want caldera-edge cave-pool suites and impeccable service in Oia, plus the only Oia collection I would send a family to.
Canaves is less a single hotel than a small Oia empire, and understanding the pieces saves you a booking headache. The one most honeymooners want is Canaves Oia Suites, the original flagship at the southern end of Oia, directly on the caldera, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and effectively adults-focused (no children under 13). The cave suites here are the classic Santorini fantasy done properly: many come with private cave plunge pools carved right into the cliff, the service is genuinely polished rather than performatively fancy, and there is a lovely 17th-century cave spa. The signature restaurant, Petra, does refined Greek-Mediterranean, and the caldera views are front and center throughout.
Here is the part I love telling people. Canaves also runs Canaves Epitome, its newest and largest property on the northern side of Oia, and it is genuinely family-friendly, with a children’s pool, more two-bedroom suites and villas, and a kids’ program. That is rare in this part of Santorini, where nearly everything worth staying at is adults-only. So if you are combining a honeymoon energy with, say, a babymoon or a multigenerational trip, this is my Oia answer. One honest note: Epitome sits a little outside the dense Oia core, so the walk to the shops and the sunset point is longer than from the Suites.

Perivolas: The Quiet, Soulful Oia Original
Best for: Design-lovers and honeymooners who want Oia’s romance without the sceney gloss, in one of the most soulful hotels on the island.
This is one of the original cliffside hotels in Santorini, around 20 suites carved into 300-year-old cave dwellings, old fishermen’s and farmers’ caves, wineries and stables restored with a restraint that makes newer hotels look like they are trying too hard. It sits on the quieter northern end of Oia, it is adults-only (no children under 16), and it is the definition of understated luxury: no logos, no fuss, just extraordinary craftsmanship and that legendary infinity pool.
About that pool. Perivolas has one of the original edgeless-pool-over-the-caldera images, the one that arguably launched a thousand imitators, and standing in it at golden hour, water the temperature of the air, the whole Aegean laid out below you and not a rail in sight, is exactly as good as you hope. The top accommodations, like the Perivolas Suite, come with private pools and steam rooms, while other suites pair with a private outdoor jacuzzi or plunge pool, so category matters here and I will make sure you are in the right one. Dining is at the intimate Perivolas Restaurant set in a restored wine cellar, for guests only, which keeps the whole place feeling like a private home rather than a hotel.
This is my pick for the couple who has traveled a lot, has strong aesthetic opinions, and wants Santorini to feel personal and quiet rather than buzzy.

Andronis Luxury Suites: Private Pools for Almost Everyone
Best for: Couples who want a private plunge or cave pool without gambling on room category, plus one of Oia’s best restaurant views.
Andronis Luxury Suites is carved dramatically into the Oia cliff, it is adults-only (no children under 13), and its whole personality is built around a promise I wish more Santorini hotels made: nearly every suite and villa here has its own private plunge pool, cave pool, or heated hot tub with caldera views. That takes the biggest booking anxiety in Santorini, will I actually get the private pool I am paying for, mostly off the table.
The property runs around 39 suites and villas, with the villa categories adding butler service and transfers, so it scales nicely from a special-occasion honeymoon to a full-tilt splurge. Dining is a real strength: Lycabettus Restaurant sits on a balcony that juts out over the caldera and has been singled out by National Geographic, and it is one of those meals where the view does half the seducing before the food even arrives. There is also Miltos’ Greek Table for something more traditional, and the Mare Sanus Spa for couples treatments.
If your top two priorities are a private pool of your own and a knockout dinner-with-a-view without leaving the property, Andronis is a very easy yes.

Mystique, a Luxury Collection Hotel: Moody, Grown-Up Oia Glamour
Best for: Couples who want a slightly moodier, more design-forward Oia hotel with the reliability of a Marriott Luxury Collection flag.
Mystique is the Oia hotel for couples who find the all-white-everything look a touch too bridal and want something with more shadow and texture. Part of Marriott’s Luxury Collection, adults-only, and set into the caldera cliffs, it trades in cave-style rooms with a darker, more sculptural palette, volcanic stone, weathered wood, that feels grown-up and a little bit rock-and-roll against the classic Santorini blue.
It is intimate, around 42 rooms, suites and villas, with the higher categories offering private plunge pools or whirlpools (there is also a shared caldera-edge pool, so again, category matters if a private pool is the goal). The main restaurant, Charisma, does Mediterranean with the caldera as its backdrop, and there is a wine cave and a full spa for the kind of slow, unhurried honeymoon days Santorini is built for. A practical perk of booking a big-brand luxury property like this: if you are a Marriott Bonvoy loyalist, this is where your points and status actually come into play, and I can still layer my advisor perks on top.

Grace Hotel Santorini, Auberge Resorts Collection: The Quiet-Luxury Imerovigli Pick
Best for: Couples who want the best caldera views on the island, serious food, and a calmer, crowd-free honeymoon in Imerovigli.
This is my quiet-luxury favorite, and it is the reason I push so many honeymooners toward Imerovigli instead of defaulting to Oia. Grace Hotel Santorini is part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, it sits at the highest point of the caldera in Imerovigli, and it is beautifully intimate at around 20 rooms and suites. What you get up here is arguably the best head-on caldera view in Santorini and a fraction of the foot traffic, which for a honeymoon is worth a great deal.
It is effectively adults-only (no children under 14) and it operates seasonally, roughly April through October. The higher categories, like the Infinity Suites, come with private heated plunge pools cantilevered over the caldera, and there is a gorgeous shared infinity pool for the classic Santorini swim-up-to-the-view moment. The dining here is a genuine draw, not an afterthought: Varoulko Santorini is the outpost of Michelin-starred chef Lefteris Lazarou, and it is some of the best seafood-forward Greek cooking on the island. Wellness is boutique in scale rather than a giant spa, which suits the intimate, tucked-away feel of the whole place.
If Oia sounds a little too busy for the honeymoon you have in mind, this is where I would put you.

Santorini Honeymoon FAQ
When is the best time to visit Santorini for a honeymoon?
The shoulder seasons, late April into early June and mid-September into late October, are the sweet spot. June and September are the couples’ bullseye: warm days, the warmest sea in September, spectacular sunsets, and noticeably thinner crowds than peak. July and August are the hottest and by far the most crowded, with rates running meaningfully higher. If you can swing a June or September honeymoon, do it. I can also flag which hotels are open, since several close for the winter season.
How many days do you need in Santorini for a honeymoon?
Three to four nights is the sweet spot for most couples. That gives you two or three slow days to actually enjoy your suite and pool (the whole point), a sunset or two, one caldera boat trip or wine tasting, and one beach day on the black-sand side. Santorini is small, and much of the magic is doing very little in a very beautiful place, so I would rather see you add nights to a second Greek island (Mykonos, Milos, or Paros) than stretch Santorini to a full week.
Santorini or Mykonos for a honeymoon?
For most honeymooners, Santorini wins on romance. It has the caldera views, the cave suites, the sunset terraces, and the serene, intimate energy that a honeymoon calls for. Mykonos is the party-and-beach-club island, with world-famous nightlife and much better swimmable sandy beaches like Psarou and Ornos. My usual advice: Santorini for the view-driven, romantic honeymoon, and if you want nightlife and beach-club energy too, pair a few nights of each. Are the beaches good in Santorini?
Honest answer: Santorini is not a swim-focused beach destination, and you should not book it expecting one. The famous caldera villages sit high on a cliff with no walkable beach at all. The actual swimming beaches, Perissa and Perivolos (long black-sand stretches, Perivolos the more beach-club chic of the two), Kamari (black sand and pebble), and the scenic Red Beach near Akrotiri, are volcanic and sit on the opposite, southeastern side of the island, a 20 to 30 minute drive from Oia. They are absolutely worth a day trip, but the real draw of a Santorini honeymoon is your caldera-edge cave-pool suite, not the sand. Is Santorini worth it for a honeymoon?
Yes, with one caveat: it is worth it if you book the right suite in the right village. Santorini done well, a private plunge pool over the caldera, sunset dinners, slow mornings, is one of the most romantic trips on earth and one of my most-requested honeymoons for a reason. Santorini done wrong, an inland room with a partial view during the hottest, most crowded week of August, can leave couples wondering what the fuss was about. The gap between those two trips is entirely in the booking, which is exactly where I come in.
How do you get to Santorini and to your hotel?
You fly into Santorini airport (code JTR), either direct in summer or via Athens. From the airport to Oia is roughly a 25 to 35 minute private transfer, a little longer in peak-summer traffic.
