Four Seasons vs. Capella vs. Ritz Mandapa Bali: Which Luxury Bali Resort is Best?

Over the years, I have spent more time in Bali than almost anywhere else in the world. It is our home away from home – a place we travel to every year, now with our two small children in tow! I have experienced this beautiful island as a young, single, recent college graduate, as a newlywed, and as a mother. Although my life and priorities have shifted and expanded over the years, the beautiful, magical, soul-stirring experience of Bali remains the same. If you have never been to Bali, you have to add it to your list. And even if you have, trust me, you will never be able to encounter all it has to offer no matter how many times you travel there!

As a luxury travel blogger, I’ve reviewed many of Bali’s luxury resorts over the years. Previously, when it came to Ubud, I used to always recommend two luxury hotels to consider when planning your trip to Bali : Four Seasons Sayan and Capella Ubud. And while these are still two phenomenal options that deserve all the praise, a hot new bombshell has entered the (private jungle) villa — Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

Before we can dive into the battle of the luxury Bali resorts, I have to give Mandapa the full review it deserves. Perched among the lush hills of Ubud, Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, is an extraordinary oasis where rich traditions of Bali merge seamlessly with modern luxury. This resort opened in August of 2015, so it is no stranger to the luxury Bali resort scene. Here, your experience will be in line with Mandapa’s three core pillars: wellness, gastronomy, and sustainability. Your every need and desire will be attended to by your personal patih (butler), who will ensure your stay is nothing short of exceptional.

The Rooms at Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Bali

With 35 suites and 25 two- and three-bedroom private pool villas, Mandapa is the perfect host for any traveler. Upon entering your room, you will immediately be in awe of the stunning architecture and interior design that was so thoughtfully curated by Jeffrey Wilkes of DesignWilkes. Dark teak wood, textured rattan chandeliers, and immersive art pieces adorn the walls of each guest room. And just outside of your window, you will find picturesque views of the verdant Bali jungle.

Kenny and I recently stayed here with our two small children, and I have to say, I was incredibly impressed with the size of the rooms and the gooooorgeous views. We LOVED it and felt fully immersed in the Bali jungle – with all the luxury amenities to make us ultra-comfortable.

Your experience here will be holistic and immersive — the serene atmosphere has just the right amount of romance, and I promise you, you will fall in love with this resort.

Four Seasons Sayan vs. Capella Ubud vs. Mandapa : Which Luxury Bali Resort is Best for You?

Now that we’ve covered what makes Mandapa so great, let’s put it side-by-side with two of Bali’s other heavy hitters: Four Seasons Sayan and Capella Ubud.

I’ve already written a deep dive comparison of Four Seasons Sayan vs. Capella Ubud, but now it’s time to bring Mandapa into the conversation, so let’s discuss.

Four Seasons Sayan, Bali: Resort Highlights & Who It’s Best For

Resort Highlights:

Named Travel & Leisure’s #1 Hotel in the World in 2018.

60 rooms designed with dark teak and Indonesian stone.

Sophisticated, polished five-star experience.

Conveniently close to downtown Ubud.

One of the few ultra-luxury Bali resorts that truly caters to children.

Choose Four Seasons Sayan if you:

Want a more Western-style five-star resort.

Prefer to be closer to downtown Ubud.

Are traveling as a family and want kid-friendly amenities without sacrificing luxury.

My Take: Four Seasons Sayan is the Ubud classic. It’s iconic, refined, and perfectly tailored if you want a luxury experience in Bali with the reliability of Four Seasons service.

Capella Ubud, Bali: Resort Highlights & Who It’s Best For

Resort Highlights:

Named Travel & Leisure’s Best Hotel in Indonesia in 2023.

Ultra-luxury “tents” set among rice paddies and jungle. It’s GORGEOUS!

A throwback to 19th-century Asia with over-the-top design details.

Best for art lovers, design aficionados, and culture enthusiasts.

Babies are okay here, but it’s not ideal for children over one.

Choose Capella Ubud if you:

Want the most authentic, culturally immersive experience possible.

Want to feel like you’ve transported into a different time period.

Are traveling without kids (or with a baby who isn’t mobile yet).

Don’t mind being a bit further from downtown Ubud.

My Take: Capella is bold and unapologetically different. It’s not for everyone, but if you want a truly one-of-a-kind stay and love design and storytelling, Capella delivers an unforgettable Ubud experience.

Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve: Resort Highlights & Who It’s Best For

Mandapa Highlights:

Truly the best of both worlds between Four Seasons Sayan and Capella Ubud.

Suites and multi-bedroom villas ideal for both couples and families.

Immersive Balinese culture meets modern, effortless luxury.

Signature Ritz-Carlton Reserve service (think: anticipatory, seamless, personal).

Magical jungle and Ayung River setting that feels private and intimate.

Choose Mandapa if you:

Want the perfect balance between authentic Balinese culture and Western luxury.

Are traveling with children and want a family-friendly yet five-star stay.

Appreciate ultra-personalized service and space to truly unwind.

My Take: Mandapa is everything I love about Bali wrapped into one property. You don’t have to choose between authenticity and comfort : here, you get both.

So, Which Luxury Resort in Bali Is the Absolute Best?

If I had to choose just one resort to stay in Bali? I’d go Mandapa!

Mandapa in my opinion combines the best of both worlds of the other two: the authenticity, cultural feel, and intimacy of Capella, and the polished luxury and family-friendly resort-ease of Four Seasons, and then elevates it with Ritz-Carlton Reserve’s signature service. For a once-in-a-lifetime Bali trip, this is the resort I’d book!!
