Is The Cooper Charleston worth it? Rooftop pool, Bar Marti and harbor views at The Cooper

Is The Cooper Charleston Worth the Price? My Honest Answer

The Cooper is Charleston’s hottest new hotel. It is also the ONLY hotel in downtown Charleston on the waterfront, making it prime real estate – with a price tag to match! So let’s get into it. IS it worth it for your trip?

I’m a Charleston local and a luxury travel advisor, and I’ve stayed at The Cooper a few times with my husband and our two kids. I also book it for clients all the time (along with other hotels in Charleston, too) So I know the pros and cons of the Cooper, and where it stacks versus other hotels in Charleston. So let’s chat about if it’s right for your trip.

Is the Cooper Charleston worth the price?

Here’s why it earns the rate. It’s the only luxury hotel sitting right on the Charleston peninsula’s waterfront, it has a guests-only private rooftop pool over the harbor, and it has a restaurant, a pool bar, a café, a burger counter and a spa all under one roof. It’s the most complete hotel in Charleston. I love it.

What You’re Actually Paying For

When people ask me whether a hotel is “worth it,” what they usually mean is: will I feel like I got my money’s worth, or will I wish I’d stayed somewhere else? So here’s what the rate actually buys you.

The waterfront

Charleston is a harbor city, and before The Cooper opened in spring 2026, there wasn’t a luxury hotel sitting right on the peninsula’s water. Now you wake up to boats and harbor light. Waterfront Park is about three minutes away on foot, Rainbow Row under ten, King Street about twelve. You don’t need a car and you barely need a plan.

A pool you can actually use

This is the one people underestimate. The fourth-floor infinity pool looks out over the harbor, it’s open year-round (weather permitting), and it’s strictly for hotel guests. In Charleston, where rooftops fill up with locals by 11am, that’s a huge deal. We always found loungers. There’s a shallow entry for little ones, and Bar Marti brings you a Battery Rose Margarita, my current favorite drink in Charleston.

The Dewberry, one of Charleston’s most popular luxury hotels, doesn’t have a pool at all. If you’re visiting May through September, the pool alone is a big part of what you’re paying for.

Food and drinks without leaving the building

The Crossing is the signature restaurant, coastal Mediterranean (which Charleston NEEDED! So good) with a Lowcountry twist from Executive Chef Nick Dugan, and it was our best dinner! Breakfast on the patio was a sleeper hit. There’s Bar Marti at the pool (the food by the pool is deeeelish!) Cooper Coffee & Wine (coffee and lunch by day, wine and tapas a few nights a week), and CurrentBurger with its walk-up window on Waterfront Park, which is a lifesaver with kids. Room service runs 24 hours. And you get free breakfast when you book through me (the breakfast is amazing)

The spa

The Spa at The Cooper is small, but great. It’s 7,000 square feet with seven treatment rooms (including a couples room), a Sanarium and a guests-only recovery room with a cryolounger. I loved my massage here (if you email me to book your trip, I’ll tell you my favorite masseuse 🙂 only my clients get to know!)

The marina

The Cooper has its own marina for hotel guests, with a custom (GORGEOUS!) Hinckley and a Scout boat for fishing, alone or with a guide. Ask the concierge what’s available for your dates. Getting out on the harbor is one of the most Charleston things you can do. I also have a favorite sailing charter I can book you on!

The feel of the Cooper

It looks like it’s been in Charleston for a century: cream stucco, green shutters, porches. Inside it is all warm wood and nautical chic touches – very yachty, very French Quarter, very calm. The service has that warm Charleston thing going on. You get a personal concierge butler throughout your stay – and they are amazing!!!

When The Cooper Is NOT Worth It

If you book the smallest room. The standard rooms are about 360 square feet and beautifully done, but tight. We tried a waterfront room without a balcony for four of us and there wasn’t much floor left after the luggage and the stroller. If you’re a family especially, that room won’t feel worth it. A One Bedroom Suite, with a separate living room and sofa bed, will feel great!

If a resort fee is a dealbreaker. The Cooper charges a nightly resort experience fee. It covers things you’d likely use anyway: lobby coffee, hosted evening drinks, turndown, bikes, the BMW house car around downtown, and the service charges for bell, housekeeping and concierge. Just know it’s there when you’re comparing rates.

If you want a beach resort. The Cooper is a city hotel on the harbor. There’s no beach and no golf. If sand is the point, look at The Sanctuary at Kiawah instead.

If you need a kids’ club. There isn’t one. The Cooper is family-welcoming and very easy with kids, but you’re the kids’ club.

If your whole trip is Upper King. If you’re there for shopping, bars and Upper King restaurants and won’t touch the pool, Hotel Bennett on Marion Square puts you closer to all of it.

Which Room Makes The Cooper Worth It

Couples: Waterfront King with Balcony. Harbor view, a little outdoor space, and plenty of room for two.

Families: Waterfront Double Queen with Balcony at minimum, for the outdoor space, and a One Bedroom Suite if you can. The suite is where The Cooper goes from lovely to the best value in Charleston. Cribs are available, and so are connecting rooms.

Celebrations: The Presidential Suite, about 1,427 square feet, with a private patio that opens right onto the pool, made for a honeymoon, an anniversary or a milestone birthday. It also has PRIVATE access to the pool area. We stayed here and it was absolutely incredible – worth every cent for that private access on the right trip!

How The Cooper Compares to Other Charleston Luxury Hotels

The Cooper vs. The Charleston Place. The Charleston Place is the classic grand dame in the dead center of the historic district, with bigger standard rooms. It’s been in the middle of a long renovation, so ask me where things stand for your dates. The Cooper is the newer, calmer choice, and it’s on the water.

The Cooper vs. Hotel Bennett. Bennett has the prettiest rooms in town and a heated rooftop pool, and it’s ideal for couples and girls’ trips on King Street. The Cooper wins on the water, the family rooms and the number of places to eat.

The Cooper vs. The Dewberry. The Dewberry is the coolest-looking hotel in Charleston with the best rooftop bar, but it has no pool and smaller rooms. Great for two nights, harder for a longer stay or a summer trip.

I break all three down in detail in The Cooper vs. The Dewberry vs. Hotel Bennett.

How to Make The Cooper Even More Worth It: Book Through Me

When you book The Cooper through me, you pay the same rate you’d pay booking direct, and you get extras on top that you can’t get booking on your own.

For The Cooper specifically, that’s a daily breakfast credit of $45 per person for up to two guests per bedroom, a $100 food and beverage credit for your stay, an upgrade on arrival when one’s available, early check-in and late check-out when available, and VIP recognition on property.

So the same room, at the same price, comes with breakfast every morning, money to spend at The Crossing or the pool bar, and a real shot at a better room.

And because I’m local and work with The Cooper’s team directly, I can do things a booking site can’t: flag your anniversary, request the harbor-facing high floor, and make sure the hotel knows you’re coming. If anything goes sideways, you have a real person who answers. Here’s more on how using a luxury travel advisor works.
