5 reasons to go to Costa Maya, Mexico!
You know how three years ago NO one had heard of Tulum and now it is on just about everybody’s top places to visit? Well, I’m here to tell you that Costa Maya is the new Tulum.
Mahahual, Costa Maya, Mexico was such a pleasant surprise on my recent cruise to the Caribbean. I was expecting a built-up port like Cozumel, but Costa Maya is TINY, and feels like the authentic Mexico of the 80s and 90s, before tourists caught wind of the beauty that is the Yucatan. The town of Mahahual is small, with a big stretch of beach, some Mayan ruins, and not much else… but between delicious authentic Mexican food, a beautiful palm tree-lined beach, and endless hammocks and beach bungalows, you will be in heaven in this Mayan paradise. Here’s 5 of the best reasons to visit:
Table of Contents
1. The food
Is there anything better than cold cervezas and frozen margaritas on the beach? The food in Mahahual is DELICIOUS. SInce the Costa Maya is like old mexico, you can expect the most delicious margs, chips and guacamole of your entire trip.
My favorite was El Faro restaurant on the beach, who set us up with this delicious spread in the sand, all day. Talk about a perfect day.
2. The hammocks
It doesn’t get more idyllic than this
3. The shopping
The beach is lined with shops, selling everything from sarongs to mexican blankets to trinkets you can take home. It’s a fun way to spend the afternoon if you’re starting to feel a bit lobster red on the beach 🙂
4. The margaritas
The best margs on our entire trip. Need I say more?

5. The beach & the watersports
Paddle in sea kayaks, jetski, snorkel, or scuba dive, all right from the Mahahual beach. Such a blast.
